The Best Colosseum Tour in Rome: The Roman Guy Exclusive Experience Was The Highlight of Our Vacation!

When you travel to Rome, visiting the Colosseum is a foregone conclusion – a must-do. It’s the freaking Colosseum, right? Even for those who aren’t well versed in their history, you’d be looking at the setting for the finale scene of The Gladiator. Or a scene from Cleopatra. Or Spartacus. Or basically any major show or movie set in Rome. The Colosseum is one of those historical landmarks typically featured in every promotion or advertisement for the City of Rome, and for good reason. It’s an astonishing technical marvel, especially for something that’s just under two-thousand years old.

Anyway, you’re in Rome and you want to visit the Colosseum, right? There are about a million different packages for tourists wanting to visit the Colosseum, and most of those tours are not great. Sorry to say, but they just aren’t. You get a tour guide who might be knowledgeable about the history and the structure, but he’s just trying to hustle you through the tour so that he can get his next tour in and up his paycheck. Or you’ll get a guide who’s genuinely nice and wants you to have a great experience, but they’re not as knowledgeable about the Colosseum and Roman history as they should be.

The solution to all your Colosseum tour needs exists and is offered by The Roman Guy. The Colosseum Dungeon, Third Level and Arena Tour is what we took and the experience will remain with us forever. The tour consists of the Colosseum [including the third floor private area], the Roman Forum, and Palentine Hill. The best part of the tour: all the restricted access to the best parts of the Colosseum! You see everything that a tourist would enjoy and you do so feeling special and well-guided.

The Colosseum part of the tour will take you the restricted areas of the arena, including the underground section. With the VIP access, you’ll be able to skip the long lines and sweaty waiting and head straight to the arena floor. You’ll be able to stand where the gladiators stood, and be able to experience the awe and wonder of the arena floor, not to mention that seeing it from the vantage point from the ground makes it doubly mind-blowing. The other tourists don’t get to actually step foot onto the arena floor, only those with the VIP access. Plus, your tour guide will give you a detailed history about the ancient customs of the gladiatorial games and the arena’s sometimes cruel history.

After visiting the arena floor, you’ll go underground into the dungeons, which is where the gladiators would wait for the games to begin. They were often kept there for hours while the crowds were waiting above them, and when the games began, they would be lifted above with ancient man-made elevators. Once again, no other tours will be allowed into this section, just your group and your guide.

Then, you visit the third floor level of the Colosseum, another restricted section. You’ll be able to see the full Colosseum, not to mention get a breathtaking view of Rome from the aerial standpoint. It gives you a sense of what an achievement the Colosseum was, that they were able to build something so aesthetically beautiful all those years ago.

After the Colosseum tour, you head into the Roman Forum, the center of ancient Rome’s public life. That will take you through the Senate House, the scene of Marc Antony’s famous speech and the place where Julius Caesar’s ashes were scattered. Of course you’ll also see The Temple of Vesta where the Vestal Virgins lived, and so much more – but we don’t want to give up all the goodies here.

Finally, Palatine Hill is the last stop on the tour. Rome was at the height of its glory when the Palatine Hill Imperial Residence was built around 1st Century A.D., and it took up an entire hill named Palatine. And people think that Beverly Hills is considered fancy. The most powerful of the ancient Roman elite lived here and as you enjoy the cooling breezes and absolutely breathtaking views you will know why!

The prices of the tour are €79.00, and we’d suggest you book your tickets as soon as possible. They tend to sell out fast, and it’s not surprising. For the first-hand experiences that they’re offering, their prices are astoundingly reasonable. And when you do book, we recommend Raffaella. Raffaella was our guide, and she was phenomenal. Funny, knowledgeable, knew everything about the history, and highly entertaining. In fact, our entire experience with the tour was fantastic, even if the Colosseum was the highlight. It was wonderful getting to visit first-hand all these parts of the Colosseum that we usually only see in films or television, and which are usually recreated. The real Colosseum is grander than anything in fiction, and being able to stand on the arena floor or go underground where the inner workings of the multi-day Colosseum festivals were managed will drive that fact home further.

The tour we took is suitable for young and old but be prepared for lots of walking, some uphill and some stairs – dress comfortably, bring sunscreen and a hat, wear good walking shoes, make sure to stay hydrated – the tour guide will make sure you get a bathroom break – of course bring YOUR CAMERA!
