Ford Green Initiative – Sustainability and Innovation for the Future @Ford #FordNAIAS

Ford Green Initiative

Ford has been pioneering advancements in the automotive industry for decades. The brand is synonymous with cultivating global-reaching strategies, while always thinking forward. In 1914, Henry Ford changed the manufacturing world by doubling his workers’ wages and shortening the work day from nine to eight hours. The result was a stronger work force which strengthened not only the company, but America’s middle class working system.

Initiatives like this make Ford the respected brand they have grown into today. They are committed to their principals and Bill Ford spoke passionately about their dedication to that commitment to improvement at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

“At Ford, we’re not just making cars. We’re making smarter technology, stronger communities and a more sustainable environment. Join us and make something that moves you. All of us at Ford are committed to delivering even more of the great products and innovations that will deliver growth and we’re making smarter technology, stronger communities and a more sustainable environment.

In fact, their sustainability report covers a vast array of goals and benchmarks for the company…

*Cultivating – Ford regularly exceeds their goal of sourcing at least 10 percent of U.S. supply chain purchases from minority- and women-owned businesses, winning third-party recognition for our efforts.

*Attainable – Ford offers many of their advanced safety features as standard equipment on a wide array of vehicles, not just our luxury models.

*Inventive – Henry Ford invented uses for agricultural materials, including soybean oil in plastic body panels and wheat-straw-reinforced steering wheels. Today, the company continues to think of new uses for an array of materials. For example, in the armrest of the 2014 Lincoln MKX, Ford introduced the first-ever automotive application of a new, cellulose-reinforced plastic, which replaces fiberglass reinforcement with fibers from sustainably produced trees.

For Living Roof

Another amazing project Ford has is its Living Roof. Growing on to of the Dearborn Truck Plant final assembly building, you’ll find a 10.4-acre garden. It’s lush, beautiful, and yet another respectable Ford Fact!

The living roof serves a multitude of purposes. It’s primary function is to collect and filter rainfall as part of a natural storm water management system. Working together, the living roof, porous pavement, underground storage basins, natural treatment wetlands and vegetated swales significantly reduce the amount of storm water flowing into the Rouge River, while also improving water quality. It also…

*Helps reduce the urban “heat effect” created by acres of tarred and paved surfaces. It also insulates the building, reducing heating and cooling costs by up to 5 percent.

*Traps air-borne dust and dirt, absorbs carbon dioxide, and creates oxygen, all of which help improve air quality.

*Creates habitat for birds, butterflies and insects.
