What do you know about Canada? If maple leaves and Canadian bacon are the first things that come to mind, you’re really missing out. Canada is made up of eight regions, it touches three oceans, it is the second largest country in the world, and it has the longest undefended border in the world. These are only a few facts that may surprise you about America’s friendly neighbor.

Bet You Didn’t Know

Located in Alberta, Canada you can find one of the world’s greatest fossil locations. Here you can take part in an authentic archeological dig and perhaps discover something new. Dozens of dinosaur species have been unearthed in this area. The Dinosaur Provincial Park has a plethora of information about species, fossils, and the natural history of the park that will satisfy any Jurassic Park fan. Bet you didn’t know that Canada had some much history, about millions of years worth.

You can find the one-of-a-kind, underground laboratory near Sudbury, Ontario. The SNOLAB is 2 km under the ground in the Vale Creighton Mine, which is also a functional nickel mine. What’s so interesting about this lab is that the depth factor and the extreme cleanliness of the lab allow them to perform truly unique experiments. Here they study subjects such as dark matter physics and subatomic physics, which have rarely been studied before.

It’s not all about science and history in Canada. Canadians consume more donuts per capita than any other country in the world. The country’s most famous donut being any Tim Horton’s donut. Tim Horton was a hockey player that opened a small donut shop in 1964. After the shop became wildly successful, Tim Horton donuts became the most famous in the country.

Canada is the second largest country in the world, just behind Russia. This makes for fewer crowds and a more sparsely populated country than most.

A black bear cub was donated to the London Zoo from Canada in 1915. This bear cub quickly became a beloved part of the zoo and attracted many visitors. The cub’s name was Winnipeg or ‘Winnie’ for short. Winnie was later featured in A.A. Milne’s stories “Winnie- the- Pooh” when the bear became his son, Christopher Robin Milne’s favorite.

You’d Never Guess

In 1967, Canadians built the world’s first UFO landing pad. In St. Paul, Alberta the pad was made to be a unique landmark for the town. In the 1990s, an additional information center was added, which includes photos of suspected UFOs, crop circles, and other reported evidence of extraterrestrials.

The Province of Manitoba is teeming with snakes, around 70,000 in fact. This part of Canada has the highest concentration of snakes in the world. After hibernating for the winter, the snakes usually emerge around May. The red-sided garter snakes find the climate and geology to be perfect for breeding and they gather annually. The debacle has now become a popular tourist attraction but it is not for those who dislike slithering of any kind.

Manitoba is not only known for slimy snakes but also some pretty cute polar bears. Nearly 60 percent of the world’s polar bears can be spotted in Churchill, Canada. Although the number of bears has rapidly decreased over the recent years.

Bathtub racing is a real thing and it takes place in Nanaimo. Those who participate in this wild tradition are known as ‘tubbers’ and they are the main attraction of the annual July Marine Festival.

Montreal is only after Paris when it comes to speaking French. This is the second largest French-speaking city in the world. Although they may speak the same language most will agree that the accents in Montreal differ greatly from those in Paris.
