Why You Should Visit Atlanta, Georgia, in 2017

When my boyfriend (now husband) and I got serious, I decided to move to his hometown just south of Atlanta, Georgia. Not exactly a big city gal, I was hesitant to start a life in a place with skyscrapers, crowds, and traffic. However, I soon discovered that being in Atlanta meant I could find something new to do every day. Here are some of the best reasons why you should visit Atlanta this year.

GEORGIA AQUARIUM

The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta is the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere. It was actually the biggest aquarium in the world until 2012. (Darn you, Singapore!) While this spot makes a great family outing, don’t think the aquarium is only aimed toward little kids. My husband and I received aquarium tickets for our wedding and were pumped! While you’re there, take time to attend the dolphin and sea lion shows.

SPORTS GAMES

Regardless of what sport you follow, there will be a professional sports team you can see in Atlanta. Now that the Falcons have finally made it to the Super Bowl again, maybe you want to buy a ticket to see them in action! (I’m still bitter about Super Bowl LI, though.) You can also see the Atlanta Braves play their first season at the new, much-anticipated SunTrust Park. Basketball fans can see the Hawks play at Philips Arena.

SOUTHERN FOOD

Going out to eat was one of my favorite things to do in Atlanta. Go to lunch at a mansion called The Swan House, where you can order a mint julep to drink and a Coca Cola cupcake for dessert. There are numerous cafés where you can indulge in southern brunch. Order buttermilk pancakes or shrimp and grits from Ria’s Bluebird Café. Try the Kirkwood Breakfast and a mimosa at Sun in My Belly.

HISTORY

Atlanta is full of historical sites. Visit the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, where you will see where King was born and buried, as well as the church he pastored. Walk through Oakland Cemetery, where a number of famous Atlanteans have been buried, as well as many Confederate soldiers. Go the Centennial Olympic Park, where the 1996 Olympics were held.

FILM SITES

The Walking Dead fans know that there are many TWD filming sites you can visit around Atlanta. If you’re a true fanatic, you can easily drive to nearby cities, such as Griffin and Newnan, to see even more spots. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was also filmed around Atlanta. Drive about 20 miles south of Atlanta to see where Stranger Things was shot.
