Brunello di Montalcino Wine Day – An Experience Never To Be Forgotten #TheRomanGuy

Brunello di Montalcino Wine Day - An Experience Never To Be Forgotten #TheRomanGuy
It’s almost time for my husband and I to embark on our second trip to Italy this year. My friends and family are constantly asking me what my fascination with Italy is, and I always jokingly reply “the food and the wine.”

Anyone who has traveled to Italy in the past can confirm this – authentic Italian food and wine will change your life, and once you return home, nothing will hold a torch to a plate of fresh pasta and veggies in Italy with a glass of wine on the side.

Every time we travel to Italy my husband and I make it a point of heading to a winery for a tasting. When we visited Italy earlier this year we booked Brunello di Montalcino Wine Day Tour with the Roman Guy. And, it was hands down the best wine tasting tour I have been on in Italy yet.

You’re probably wondering why an avid traveler like myself who frequents Italy would book a tour rather than planning the tasting myself. The Roman Guy is my go to guide when we are vacationing in Italy. The staff is amazing, they handle everything, they treat us like royalty, and they are all locals and can give us insight and knowledge we never would have discovered on our own.

Our Brunello di Montalcino Wine Day Tour kicked off bright and early in the morning with our friendly guide from The Roman Guy picking us up in an air-conditioned van. And, that alone was worth booking the trip because it was a scorcher that day! Mario was super nice and knowledgeable, and he treated my husband and I like a King and Queen.

Our guide whisked us away to our first vineyard of the day, Masto Janni. We were greeted by the friendly owner, who was eager to show us around and give us a first-hand look at their wine process. The scenery at the vineyard was absolutely beautiful, and it was a great way to kick off the morning. Of course, we couldn’t leave before we capped off our vineyard tour with a delicious wine tasting.

After getting our shares of red wine, we hit the road with our guide from The Roman Guy and he took us on a scenic ride through the Tuscan Hills en route to lunch. Mario really knew his stuff, and he made it a point of sharing the area’s history with us while we enjoyed the breathtaking scenery and majestic Cyprus trees.

The Brunello di Montalcino Wine Day Tour with the Roman Guy is a 7-hour trip, so of course, we had to have lunch. Our guide recommended to us to a lovely locally owned restaurant and we enjoyed the Tuscan view while feasting on some authentic Italian cuisine. Then, it was back to exploring. In order to truly embrace the famous Brunello wine, you have to really get to know the city of Montalcino, where it hails from.

The wine tasting day trip also included a visit to the Abbey of Sant’Antimo. Abbey of Sant’Antimo is a hidden gem in Tuscany. It doesn’t make it on a lot of tourists’ must-see lists, but that’s simply because most people don’t know that it exists, it’s one of Italy’s best-kept secrets! Archaeologists have dated the beautiful monastery back to the 800’s, the architecture has withstood the test of time, and is still inhabited by monks today. Like every other centuries old building in Italy, it’s decorated with lavish artwork and sculptures.

After taking in the beautiful sights of Tuscany’s Montalcino, we concluded our trip with a final wine tasting at an adorable family run winery, Le Chiuse.

We were met outside the winery by the owner, Lorenzo who recounted the fascinating and ancient history of Le Chiuse.  The vineyard has obtained the Organic certification from the European Union and the harvest is made only by hand, the vinification follows the traditional process.

Lorenzo lead us down to the cellars and he explained that the hot days and cool nights in the vineyard make for excellent Sangiovese grapes. He spoke to us about the grapes, the winemaking process and by the time he finished we knew a lot about Rosso di Montalcino & Brunello di Montalcino.

Now it was time for the tasting we were sampling the Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino.   We were able to distinguish the difference between the Rosso & The Montalcino.  The Rosso was less tannic, lighter and fruitier because it is only required to age one year.  The Brunello is aged longer than any other Tuscan wine before it is released, for a minimum of four years, and two have to be in cask or barrel.

We enjoyed both wines so much that Lorenzo helped us arrange to have a case of each sent home to Canada. (I’m a Canadian and we have strict restrictions on alcohol imports but it is possible to do with the proper licenses.)

After a wonderful tour, our guide from The Roman Guy whisked us back to our hotel just in time for a much-needed nap before dinner.

I’m clearly a huge fan of wine tastings, but nothing compares to tasting authentic Tuscan wine straight off the vine. If you are planning a trip to Italy, it wouldn’t be complete without a trip to a Tuscany vineyard and some authentic wine tasting. I’m already trying to figure out how we can fit a trip back to Montalcino in our itinerary this Fall.
