There is Gelato and then there is Gelato, but the best Gelato by a country mile is in Italy. If you don’t know what Gelato is, it is the Italien word for Ice Cream. I love ice cream of all types, but the Italians have done something magical with their Gelato. Gelato is made with milk, cream, various sugars, and flavoring such as fresh fruit and nut purees and must contain at least 3.5% butterfat. Even though Italians call it ice cream it is nothing like our Canadian or US brands. Gelato recipes usually include more egg yolks, more milk, less cream and no air. It actually has less fat than regular ice cream, but gelato’s low overrun makes for an extremely dense, rich and creamy treat.
With flavors like Bacio, Nutella, Stracciatella, Dulce de Leche, Cannella, Melone, Limone and many more, there is something for everyone. I have tried Gelato all over Rome, but without a doubt the best Gelato I have ever tried was at La Gelateria Frigidarium just off Piazza Navona. Not only is it the best, but it is the cheapest.
For 3 Euros you get 3 scoops of the most scrumptious home made Gelato I have ever tasted. To top it off they dip it in either white chocolate, dark chocolate or put whip cream on it. How can you go wrong?
During our recent trip to Rome for one week we went back and had Gelato four times. My favorite is Bacio, but all the flavors are yummy.
We went back tonight and I tried their house brand, Frigedaria, all I can say is yum, yum and yum. From now on when I am in Rome, this will be the only place I will be buying Gelato. If you are in Rome, don’t miss it, it is located Via del Governo Vecchio just off Piazza Navona. It is not difficult to find, just look for the line 🙂
