Five Tips To Experience Your Vacation Destination Like A Local

For some travelers, hitting up all the big-name tourist attractions at their destination is a top priority. Every major museum, landmark, and shopping district is on their list of places to visit, and they wouldn’t have it any other way. Others, however, prefer a more authentic experience when they travel – one that allows them to experience their vacation destination like a local. While taking the tourist route can be an easy way to have fun, you might be surprised to see how much fun you have – and how different your experience truly is – when you stray from the beaten path.

If you’re looking for a more authentic vacation experience, here are five tips to consider to experience your vacation destination like a local:

Recommendations

Look for recommendations where the locals do. Let’s be honest – locals don’t leave reviews on TripAdvisor. While there is certainly merit in hearing the opinions of visitors, it’s often better to rely on a more locally-trusted source of information, like Yelp or a city-specific forum on Reddit, to seek recommendations and inspiration.

No Tourist Traps

Steer clear of the tourist traps. Don’t make the mistake of wasting your money at tourist traps – overpriced establishments that offer tourists a side of the city only they – the out-of-towners – experience. Instead of grabbing dinner at the first restaurant you see on the main strip, head a few blocks over and look for a spot that’s less overrun by non-locals. You’ll enjoy lower prices and a real taste of your destination.

Strike Up Conversation

Ask around. Some of the best recommendations I’ve ever received have come from perfect strangers – gas stations cashiers, hotel receptionists, and others I’ve encountered over the course of my travels. If you’re brave enough to strike up a conversation with someone who’s actually familiar with your destination, you’ll likely uncover some hidden gems you wouldn’t find in a guidebook or listed on a website.

Stay Local

Eat, shop, and stay local. Skip the chain restaurants and coffee shops and stick to locally-run cafes and eateries instead Consider an Airbnb or a bed and breakfast instead of a massive hotel chain, and try to find your souvenirs and other splurges at local boutiques. Sticking with what you know might seem comfortable and easy, but if you really want to experience your location like a local, you’ll need to choose the unfamiliar.

Learn the Culture

Know the norms. It’s hard to experience your vacation destination like one of the locals when you stick out like a sore thumb. This is especially important if you’re traveling abroad. You’ll want to see how the local residents dress, practice a few key phrases to interact with others, and take note of any strange cultural differences, like gestures that are perceived as offensive.

With a little preparation and a few considerations, it isn’t too hard to leave the tourist experience behind and get to know your vacation destination like the locals do. See what you can do to make your next vacation feel a little more authentic, and you might be surprised to see how much you enjoy this easy – and often low-key – way of traveling.
