Female solo travel offers up a variety of benefits and can actually be a lot of fun if done properly. Traveling on your own however, does differ quite a bit from travelling with a group or even a partner. In fact, it is especially easy to make mistakes when setting out on your first solo travel adventure. While paranoia isn’t the answer, knowing the mistakes women make when traveling alone, so you can avoid them, can help.

Not Staying in Touch

When traveling alone, it is important to continue checking in at least semi regularly with friends or family. While sometimes it feels like a burden, especially when you are enjoying yourself, a quick text is an easy way to add an extra layer of protection to your solo adventures. Checking in regularly is even more important if you are planning on participating in any high-risk activities as you travel, this will ensure that your loved ones have a general idea of where you were and what you were doing. Many women, when traveling alone, forget to do this.

Telling People Where You’re Staying

This mistake is a very bad one, especially if you are traveling alone to another country. Do not bring guests back to your accommodations, male or female, for any reason. The safety concerns when doing this are far more than the potential pros you may experience.

Taking Food and Drink from Strangers

While you do not always want to believe the worst about people, it is important that you do not take food or drink from those you do not know. Safeguard everything that you consume while traveling alone. While you may be lulled into a false sense of safety with people you meet on your adventures, avoid falling into that trap. Keep an eye on your drinks and only eat the food you have seen come out of the kitchen with your own eyes.

Being Too Spontaneous

Being somewhat spontaneous while traveling solo can be exciting, but totally letting go can be risky. When you totally let go it is easier to overlook the important details that you need to pay attention to. It is ok to experience a love of travel without having to worry too much, you still want to ensure that you keep your safety in mind.

Not Having an Emergency Plan

It is so important to have a plan in case of emergency, especially when you are traveling alone as a woman. Make sure to take note of the important numbers you need at your destination, like the local police or your county’s consulate. Keep your bags and suitcases with you while you are in transport in cabs or shuttles in case you need to remove yourself from the situation quickly. Get a business card from where you are staying so you always have the phone number and address with you.

Always hope for the best and plan for the worst. When women travel alone, it is important that they are ready and prepared for anything and everything. Make sure to stay in touch with loved ones, don’t tell people where you are staying, avoid taking food or drink from those you do not know, don’t be too spontaneous and make sure you have an emergency plan in place. This will make you solo adventures safer, and help you to avoid the many mistakes women make when traveling alone.
