Coney Island is located an hour from midtown Manhattan by subway. It was, at one time, New York’s most popular beachside amusement area. While it was quiet for several decades, the amusement park is being revitalized to attract summertime crowds back for rollercoaster rides, hot dogs, tanning on the beach and strolls on the boardwalk. Part of this exciting revitalization is an exciting rollercoaster, set to be introduced later in 2021.
Coney Island Revitalized
Families enjoy spending time on Brighton Beach, or strolling Brighton Beach Avenue, with its Slavic shops, cafes and restaurants. However, many families also love to head to the Coney Island amusement park. Pretty soon, there will be yet another reason for visiting this historic amusement park.
A new, adrenalin-inducing rollercoaster is to be debuted later in 2021 and will be named after the mythical bird, the Phoenix. While the park has been closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it does reopen, crowds will be flocking to Coney Island for this new adventure.
Introducing the Phoenix
According to Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park, the Phoenix will stand 68 ft tall and will zoom along its tracks at 34 mph. Passengers’ feet will dangle below as they soar through the air.
Originally planned in 2018 and financed before the COVID-19 pandemic, the new rollercoaster cost some $6m. While in truth it doesn’t technically go upside down, passengers on the Phoenix will be twisted 115 degrees. However, while the ride is adrenalin-inducing and fast, it will also be suitable for families looking for adventure and excitement.
Coney Park Amusement Park ‘Rises From The Ashes’
The Vourderis family has owned the 100-year-old amusement park since 1983. According to the family, the suspended rollercoaster ride has been themed for the flight of the iconic Phoenix, as it symbolizes a rebirth into a more accepting and loving world following the coronavirus pandemic.
In a statement, the family said, “New York is known for its ability to take a punch and bounce back.” Their spokesperson said Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park believes that, while these times are trying and painful, they are also critical and together. They said, “We will most certainly rise from the ashes and give birth to the best of times.”
The amusement park started with the Wonder Wheel, which was invented by Charles Hermann and constructed in 1920. The park was designated an official New York City landmark in 1989 by the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission. The Wonder Wheel stands 150 feet tall and weighs 200 tons. With its 24 cars, of which 16 are swinging and eight are stationary, this Ferris wheel is the centerpiece of the park. The Wonder Wheel has maintained a perfect safety record all the way.
