The famous Appalachian Trail, national parks, state parks, numerous mountain ranges—Southeast America is a hiker’s dream! Whether you live in this part of the country or are planning a trip, you should try to fit a walk into your schedule. Here are six of the best hikes in Southeast America.
BLOOD MOUNTAIN – GEORGIA
Blood Mountain is one of the most famous peaks on the entire 2,200-mile-long Appalachian Trail. There are many trails on the mountain, the most popular being the Byron Reece Trail to the peak. This path is a little over four miles round-trip and provides hikers with one of the best views in Georgia from the top.
WHITAKER POINT TRAIL – ARKANSAS
Whitaker Point lies in the Ozark Mountains. The trail is a short loop that can be hiked in roughly an hour. Whitaker Point Trail leads to the gorgeous Hawksbill Crag, one of the most photographed spots in Arkansas. I know several couples who have gotten engaged in this stunning spot!
CHIMNEY TOPS TRAIL – TENNESSEE
This trail is in Smokey Mountains National Park. It’s four steep, difficult miles to the peak, but the views make the trek worth your time! Visitors enjoy scenic views of the park throughout the hike.
MARY’S ROCK – VIRGINIA
Mary’s Rock is another beloved mountain on the Appalachian Trail, in the beautiful Shenandoah National Park. If you want to stick to the Appalachian Trail route, hike the path starting from the Panorama Visitor Center. If you want a shorter, easier option, hike the path beginning at the Meadow Spring parking area.
GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN – NORTH CAROLINA
This mountain is in Grandfather Mountain State Park. There are several peaks. At Linville Peak, you will find the “mile-high swinging bridge,” as well as an amazing view. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Charlotte! The best time of year to hike Grandfather Mountain is in autumn when the hills are a deep orange.
RAINBOW FALLS TRAIL – SOUTH CAROLINA
This trail is in Jones Gap State Park. The path gets its name from the gorgeous Rainbow Falls, a waterfall you will find on your hike. Beware, Rainbow Falls Trail is difficult. However, it is only four miles long and there are plenty of fellow hikers on the trail at any given time if you need a little encouragement!
