Right now, everyone in the world is grounded and unable to climb on a plane and head to foreign shores. What happens when you work as a travel editor and no one can travel? You inspire people to dream!
To keep up the wanderlust spirit, Pól Ó Conghaile, travel editor for the Irish Independent, came up with a great idea.
#WhenWeTravelAgain Encourages People To Share Their Dreams
Pól began sharing beautiful images from all over the world to inspire others to share their travel dreams on Twitter. In his first message, he shared that people in Ireland are only allowed out of the house for exercise and that is only within 2 km of their homes. Pól wrote that he feels overwhelmed by the onslaught of COVID-19 news and wanted to lighten things.
Pól went for a walk to clear his head and began thinking about where he would like to go when this is all over. He found that felt pretty good and he decided to share the news. Pól headed to Twitter to say he would like to share a photo each day to distract us all and allow us to dream of when we can travel again. He asked people to share their photos with him – taken anywhere and at any time – using the hashtag #WhenWeTravelAgain.
The travel editor went on to post an image every day at 8 pm and will do so until the time comes when we can all travel again. His first image was of a surfer on a deserted beach in Dunfanaghy, Donegal, Ireland. The surfer is stretching, preparing for his next wave. Pól said he chose that particular image because it signified freedom, something we all lack right now.
Great Response To The Hashtag
The #WhenWeTravelAgain hashtag has so far attracted a huge response. Lonely Planet quotes Pól as saying there have been hundreds of photos. These include cafés in Paris, the Sydney Opera House, the beaches of the Algarve in Portugal and lighthouses along the Wild Atlantic Way.
Pól signed off by saying that while it is sad these places feel out of reach right now, it is inspirational to see the images. It happily powers our travel dreams for the post-COVID-19 future.
