Disneyland and Walt Disney World will indefinitely remain closed until June amid COVID-19 concerns. Disney theme parks across the globe have been shut down as of March 16. Due to the coronavirus pandemic sweeping across the globe, encouraging everyone to practice social distancing and self-isolation. How will the Walt Disney Company handle this problem?

The operators of two of the biggest theme parks announced on March 12 that California’s Disneyland would close for its fourth time since it opened its doors in 1955. The Walt Disney World Company also announced that it would close Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Paris on March 16. This is the first time in history that all six Disney theme parks would be closed simultaneously.

On Wednesday, March 27, the Walt Disney Company announced that its U.S. theme parks would remain closed indefinitely. Cast members would get paid through April 18. The company also released a statement to Vox about this matter:

“While there is still much uncertainty with respect to the impacts of COVID-19, the safety and well-being of our guests and employees remains The Walt Disney Company’s top priority.”

“As a result of this unprecedented pandemic and in line with direction provided by health experts and government officials, Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort will remain closed until further notice.”
“The Walt Disney Company has been paying its cast members since the closure of the parks, and in light of this ongoing and increasingly complex crisis, we have made the decision to extend paying hourly parks and resorts cast members through April 18.”

However, the earliest available reservation available on the Walt Disney World or Disneyland Resort website is June 1. That means the theme parks won’t be open until then. In addition, Downtown Disney at Disneyland and Disney Springs at Walt Disney World Resort will remain closed until further notice.

The prolonged shutdowns also depend on the “currently unknowable duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.” While the entertainment industry is taking a hit, Disney is feeling the pinch even more so than expected. Disney is also scrambling to re-release their feature films another time. Extended park closures, production delays, and other forces could hit Disney in the wallet in the months to come.
