As we head closer to St. Patrick’s Day, travelers around the world are making plans to celebrate the Irish holiday. With St. Paddy’s coming soon on March 17, Americans can make plans for a staycation for the holiday at the following cities that stand out for the event. Personal finance company, WalletHub recently compared 200 of the largest US cities to celebrate, with metrics including Irish pubs and restaurants, percentage of Irish population, average beer prices, crime rate and more.

Researchers broke the metrics up into four categories, as follows:

  • St. Patrick’s Day traditions (50 points)
  • Costs (20 points)
  • Safety and accessibility (20 points)
  • St. Patrick’s Day weather

Each city earned an overall score out of 100.

The metrics were broken up into four categories, including St. Patrick’s Day traditions (50 points), costs (20 points), safety and accessibility (20 points) and St. Patrick’s Day weather (10 points), with each city earning an overall score out of 100. Meanwhile, the top 20 includes popular cities from each region of the US, with the Midwest, Northeast, South and West Coast represented.

However, it seems Eastern Massachusetts stands out when it comes to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. The ratings place Boston at No. 1 and nearby Worcester at No. 7. Moreover, Boston ranks No. 1 in the all-important St. Paddy’s Day traditions category. The city also hosts the fourth-most Irish pubs and restaurants per capita. Meanwhile, Worcester hosts the nation’s third-highest percentage of Irish population, and fourth-lowest average beer price in March 2024.

However, Chicago ranks at No. 2 beating Boston when it comes to costs (54th) and safety and accessibility (48th). However, when looking at the weather on St. Patrick’s Day this year, they had a low ranking of 194th.

Next in the top five are Savannah, Reno and Pittsburgh, with New York City in sixth place and Buffalo in eighth place. According to the report, The Big Apple hosts the most Irish pubs and restaurants per capita and as can be seen above, excellent parades.

When it comes to weather and St. Paddy’s Day traditions, Tampa (ninth) and Fort Lauderdale (fifteenth) in Florida rank well.
