The International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT) has awarded the European country of Slovenia the title of European Region of Gastronomy 2021. This worthy award is based on the country’s gastronomic offerings, combined with the development of sustainable living and quality of life in Slovenia.
How Did IGCAT Choose Slovenia For 2021?
First of all, Slovenia had to prove to a panel that it has developed sufficient gastronomy-related projects and programs to merit receiving the award. This panel includes experts from various fields, including culture, hospitality, tourism and agriculture. The IGCAT will support and nurture Slovenia to ensure it is ready to take on the challenges outlined in its bid for the prestigious award.
What makes Slovenia different is that it is the only European country that connects the Mediterranean, the Alps, The Karst and the Pannonian Plain. IGCAT deems the country’s exceptionally diverse landscapes and nature are tied to its colorful culture and diverse gastronomy.
Slovenia’s culinary philosophy is based on the “garden to table” principle. This sustainable practice is reflected in the close relationships between the country’s chefs and local producers. It is also clear from the connections between the various Slovenian landscapes and traditional culinary experiences.
Slovenian Green Cuisine
The Slovenian Tourist Board is announcing the new “Slovenian Green Cuisine” label, which will form part of the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism. The certification program celebrates the various destinations and service providers who place sustainability at the heart of their activities.
The Slovenian Tourist Board has recently launched their new website where readers can find out more about the full story of gastronomy in Slovenia. It has dedicated a special section to stories of innovative Slovenian chefs and their connections to high-quality ingredients and local producers.
About Slovenia As A Travel Destination
Slovenia might be a small country, but it has much to offer, including sparkling lakes and rivers and the soaring Julian Alps. Adventurers can explore the magic of the Postojna and Škocjan caves, or relax on the beautiful coastline along the Adriatic Sea.
The country also offers a mix of climates, ranging from warm Mediterranean breezes to the snow of the foothills of the Alps. More than half the total surface of Slovenia is still covered in forest, proving it to be one of the greenest countries in the world.
Architectural And Cultural Treasures
This green and beautiful country offers even more with its architectural beauty and cultural treasures. These include the tiny baroque chapel on a picturesque island in Lake Bled, or one of the dramatic castles looming over the countryside.
Like the cuisine, architecture in Slovenia is varied, with the Venetian harbor towns on the coast, the Gothic churches of the Julian Alps, the rustic farmhouses of Prekmurje and the art nouveau splendor of Ljubljana. There are also many cultural and fascinating museums to explore.
Take some time out in Slovenia in 2021 – enjoy the scenery, the culture and the gastronomy of this tiny European nation.
