Goa in India is known for its idyllic, golden beaches, stretching along its coastline overlooking the Arabian Sea. However, with its history as a Portuguese colony prior to 1961, Goa reveals a different side of India. Here, travelers can visit 17th-century churches and tropical spice plantations. Moreover, Goa’s cuisine is influenced by its Portuguese history, with delicious dishes to sample. Meanwhile, this western Indian state has laid-back fishing villages to visit and is popular with locals and international travelers alike. For now, we take a brief look at five of the best beaches in the state of Goa, India.
1. Palolem Beach, South Goa
Lined with palm trees, Palolem is known as a backpacker’s paradise, with its crescent-shaped sand and colorful beach huts. This picturesque beach features a selection of boat trips to explore the area and its waters are safe for the little ones, with lifeguards on duty.
Dotted among the beach huts are places to buy cold drinks and snacks, or hire sun beds or surfboards for the day. One thing the beach is famous for is its silent discos, where visitors can listen to music while wearing headphones, keeping the beach in its true tranquil state.
2. Candolim Beach, North Goa
Located in the north of Goa, Candolim is a popular beach for locals and foreigners alike. This busy beach offers sun beds for relaxation after a busy day of water sports. For those looking for action, this 18-mile stretch of sand offers parasailing and Jet Ski rides. Meanwhile, the whole family can enjoy banana boat rides on the clear, warm waves.
Moreover, the beach has everything anyone could wish for, including restaurants, beach shacks, bars, hostels and five-star resorts.
3. Ashwem Beach
Also in the north of the state, Ashwem is one of the best beaches for travelers looking for peace and serenity. It is also considered one of the best-maintained and cleanest beaches in the state. Stretching one mile along the coast, Ashwem offers crystal clear water and soft golden sand. Meanwhile, the beach is backed by the proverbial waving palm trees.
While the beach is relatively quiet, there is a good range of cafés, restaurants and pubs. Moreover, there is a bonus, as sun beds and sun umbrellas are provided free of charge.
4. Morjim Beach, North Goa
Also located in the north, Morjim is a relatively quiet spot, with sand stretching for almost two miles. The beach is ideal for swimming, but also offers boat tours to see the dolphins or kitesurfing for more active folk. Meanwhile, Morjim is famous for its turtles and is the nesting ground for endangered Olive Ridley turtles.
A little further up from the protected turtle area, a selection of beach huts, cafés, restaurants and nightclubs are available. However, it is good to know Morjim is not overly touristic, offering a more authentic Goa experience.
5. Benaulim Beach, South Goa
Located in southern Goa, Benaulim is a beautiful stretch of sand, perfect for swimming, sunbathing or romantic strolls. In fact, this is one of the quieter beaches of this Indian state, even in high season.
While it is quiet and tranquil, Benaulim also offers beach shacks serving the local cuisine and cooling drinks. It’s one of those places to truly chill out in Goa.
