Luxembourg is a tiny country, around the size of the state of Rhode Island, but this isn’t holding it back. It is not only the richest country in the European Union, but it is also considered to be the wealthiest in the world. With all this wealth, the average tourist might think they can’t afford to visit. However, it turns out Luxembourg is surprisingly affordable and within reach of almost every traveler.

Why is Luxembourg affordable?

Considering it’s the richest country, Luxembourg is almost one of the smallest in the world. In fact, it is slightly smaller than the US state of Rhode Island. So tiny, but so rich, surely it will cost a fortune to visit here?

Luxembourg has a high GDP per person, so you would imagine it would be very expensive to visit, but it isn’t. Read on to find out how Luxembourg is affordable for even budget travelers.

Affordable accommodation

Just because the country is full of wealthy residents doesn’t automatically mean that it is expensive. Yes, there are plenty of 5-star hotels in Luxembourg, but they don’t come with a hefty price tag. In fact, when compared to other European capitals like London or Paris, Luxembourg’s hotels are surprisingly affordable.

Meanwhile, in August, rooms are available in the city center for only around $249. However, for those on a budget, a basic hotel room in the center of Luxembourg City is around $100 per night.

One major bonus of visiting Luxembourg is that all public transport is free. While normally, getting around while on vacation can quickly tot up, here using trains and buses is free throughout the country. The country switched to free public transport back in 2020, which means locals and tourists alike can hop on board without paying anything. This applies not only to buses and trains but also to the new, modern tram system.

No ticket is required, but it is recommended to keep some form of identity on you in case a conductor asks for it while you are on board. Not only can you explore Luxembourg for free, but you can easily connect to other networks with efficient cross-border connections with Belgium, France and Germany.

Most museums are free to visit
