Minister Paul Liu of the National Development Council (NDC) recently announced that he hopes a six-month digital nomad visa will continue to attract global talent. It was explained that, rather than launching a rival visa, Taiwan’s visa would complement Japan, South Korea and Thailand in the offer.

In one example, remote workers could travel to Taiwan after using Japan’s non-extendable six-month visa.

Currently, European Union tourists can enjoy a 90-day, visa-free access to Taiwan. However, they are not permitted to work during this time. Meanwhile, Liu also announced plans to make it easier for skilled, high-earning foreign workers to gain permanent residence in Taiwan.

What other Asian countries offer digital nomad visas?

2024 has been an excellent year so far for remote workers and digital nomads to work in Asia. In the case of South Korea, that country is expected to offer a digital nomad visa that is valid for up to two years. Moreover, the key goal is to boost tourism in the country.

Meanwhile, Thailand finally launched its long-awaited digital nomad visa last week. This visa will grant remote workers access to its exciting capital city and idyllic beaches for up to one year. The city of Bangkok is just under a four-hour flight from Taipei.

So far, no further details are available on Taipei’s digital nomad visa, including which nationalities can apply and the income requirements. However, according to Taipei Times, Liu did say Taiwan hopes to retain at least 10 percent of the international talent who take it up.

Taiwan offers a subtropical climate, beautiful landscapes, scenic hikes, idyllic beaches, thousands of temples, and other historic places to visit. Meanwhile, the island nation is approximately half the size of Scotland, making it easy to travel from the cities to the beautiful national parks.

Basically, digital nomads could work in the lively coworking spaces in Taipei in the morning, enjoy a feast of tasty street food for lunch, and then head to Yangmingshan National Park, just a short 30-minute drive away to enjoy nature.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s high-speed rail network easily transports them from the capital to the southern harbor city of Kaohsiung in the shortest time.
