The Amtrak train takes passengers on a 611-mile journey through gorgeous and scenic countryside. Even better, passengers don’t need to leave their seats to enjoy picturesque villages, green hills, and the epic fall foliage Vermont is renowned for.

The Amtrak train sets out from Washington, DC, running north into New York City. From there, passengers are taken through some of the best locations for fall foliage in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and finally, Vermont.

For those readers who haven’t traveled with Amtrak before, the seats are wonderfully comfortable, even in Coach Class. Guests will enjoy wide reclining sets and space to stretch their legs out. It is recommended to snag a window seat for the best views, but even the aisle seats give a pretty good view out the window.

When is the best time to catch the Amtrak train?

According to the Vermont Tourism Board, the best time to visit Vermont for the fall season does tend to vary. However, the season tends to run from the last week in September through the first in October.

Meanwhile, to travel the full route of The Vermonter train from Washington, DC, to St. Albans in Vermont costs a mere $62 for the round trip. This guestimate is based on traveling from Friday, October 25 through Sunday, October 27, for an epic and colorful long weekend journey. The fall foliage journey on this route takes 12 hours and 40 minutes.

While this is an excellent price for a fall foliage train ride, travelers should act quickly to avoid disappointment. Currently, Amtrak is offering that price for its Fall Travel Flash Sale which offers at least 30 percent off normal fare prices. Moreover, the offer applies to train rides between August 14 and October 31, but travelers must book their seats before August 7.

While in Vermont guests should try out the stroll in Aldis Hill Park at Hard’ack in St. Albans, considered to be among the best foliage viewing spots in the area. The comfortable 1.6-mile trail takes around 45 minutes to complete and is ideal for walkers of all abilities. For those wanting to spend time in the city, head to Taylor Park in St. Albans for a colorful scene.
