Italy signals that it will reopen to foreign travelers as early as mid-May, which is music to the ears of many Americans and Canadians, who have been left off of Italy’s list of travelers during these last several months. Along with Greece, Croatia, Malta, and even Iceland, Italy said the country is gearing to have a health pass ready later this month that will facilitate travel ahead of Europe’s target reopening date in June.
In Mid-May International Travelers Can Have A Italian Pass
If you’ve been missing all of those romantic walks in your favorite neighborhoods in Rome, shopping trips in Milan and lazy summer days in Lake Como, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi wants you not to worry because he’s doing everything he can to make sure that your next trip to Italy will keep you both healthy and safe from Covid-19. That, and he also wants Italy’s tourism sector to get the much-needed boost from foreign travelers that it needs. Italy’s economy relies on tourism, as it generates about 13 percent of its economic output.
“Let us not wait until mid-June for the EU pass. In mid-May tourists can have the Italian pass . . . so the time has come to book your holidays in Italy,” Draghi said after a May 4 meeting of G20 tourism ministers, according to Reuters.
“In mid-May tourists can have the Italian pass … so the time has come to book your holidays in Italy,” he added.
Italy Intends To Set Clear, Simple Rules
What’s more, Draghi also said it was important to provide clear, simple rules to ensure that tourists can once again travel freely in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. He added the European Union is looking to introduce a health pass by the middle of June, allowing easy travel across the continent for those who had been vaccinated, had just tested negative or could prove they had recently recovered from COVID-19.
International tourist arrivals dropped 73 percent globally in 2020 and nearly 62 million travel and tourism jobs have been lost globally as a result of the continued lockdowns, quarantines, and travel restrictions from all around the world.
