Americans Fully Vaccinated Allowed to Travel to The EU This Summer
Travel news shows that the latest word on post-vaccination era travel is trending upward. Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, told The New York Times on Sunday that Americans who have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 will be able to visit the European Union this summer.
According to the Times report von der Leyen said, “The Americans, as far as I can see, use European Medicines Agency-approved vaccines. This will enable free movement and the travel to the European Union.”
Vaccinated Americans Safe to Travel to The EU this summer
According to the report Von der Leyen did not offer an exact timeline on when exactly tourist travel could open up again nor details on how the process would work.
The European Union stopped all non-essential travel to the area over a year ago in an attempt to limit the spread of coronavirus.
Andy Slavitt is the White House senior Covid-19 adviser and he was pleased by Von der Leyen’s comments. He said that were an affirmation of the US vaccination program.
Slavitt told CNN’s Pamela Brown, “What the world is basically saying is, they’re looking at the US, they’re looking at the success of our vaccination program, they’re looking at the reduction of disease, and while they know we’re not done yet, they’re saying those Americans are safe to come to our country without risk of spreading Covid-19.”
“Think about that. That’s incredible,” Slavitt said. “Just a few months ago, we were the nation in the world that was one of the most cut off from travel. That just shows what an incredible few months we’ve had vaccinating Americans. “
He added that visiting EU countries is one of the regained freedoms awaiting fully vaccinated Americans.
Travel to The EU Has Opened Up This Summer
He added, “So I think we’re going to find more and more things like that, both internationally but also, Pam, in the US, I think you’re going to see increasing steps over the next few weeks on what vaccinated Americans can do, in addition to just travel — because not all of us travel — that are going to be very important,” he said.
“There’s no question that the key to getting back to life that we used to know is vaccination,” Slavitt said.
Current data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that around 28% of Americans are now fully vaccinated.
