Nestling in the mid-Atlantic, the Azores archipelago is an autonomous region of Portugal. Each island features dramatic landscapes and quaint fishing villages, as well as tea plantations and vineyards. The Azores are a popular destination for travelers and now, thanks to National Geographic Traveler, the archipelago has been named one of the most beautiful places to visit in the world.

In the December edition of National Geographic Traveler magazine, the Azores archipelago has come up in the 25 most beautiful, must-visit places in 2023. However, this has happened before, as the islands were awarded the same distinction in 2016. However, of interest to note, the magazine has introduced a new category this year, replacing “sustainability” with a broader “community” category.

Ecotourism, sustainability and green travel have featured a lot in the travel headlines recently and National Geographic Traveler has joined the trend. Due to this, nature, community, culture, family and adventure are five categories promoted for 2023. Due to its glorious landscapes, The Azores were placed in the nature category, while gaining prominence for sustainability programs. In fact, National Geographic also places the archipelago among the top five “wildly underrated natural escapes for 2023.”

Not just a return to travel

Amy Alipio, the senior editor for National Geographic Traveler, hopes that 2023 won’t just see a huge return to travel, but also something more. She said in a statement:

Because when you are awed by something, you treat it with respect. And that spirit is something we want to encourage with this list.

This year, National Geographic’s editors focused on destinations with community-led conservation efforts. These include healing and heritage journeys, as well as ways for travelers to give back to the location. The category also includes destinations that are actively involved in sustainability, ecotourism, and inclusive travel.

When looking for an ecotourism destination, there are many factors. However, with its biodiversity and so much to see and do there, the Azores is a must-visit location. Not only can travelers experience the beauty of the natural landscape, but they can enjoy the many adventures to be had.

Here, you can watch the whales in their natural habitat in the islands’ surroundings. Jump into the Atlantic and go scuba diving or snorkeling. Alternatively, explore all nine islands on foot or on horseback, and enjoy paragliding, canoeing, sport fishing, surfing, and golf.

Besides the Azores, at the top of the list of 25 must-visit locations in 2023 are Botswana, Italy, Laos, Mexico, New Zealand and the US. Moreover, Alberta, Canada has also made the list.

It isn’t just National Geographic readers that have applauded the Azores, as they are also considered the “Best Adventure Tourism Destination in Europe” by the World Travel Awards. Moreover, the archipelago is the first of its kind in the world to gain the certification of “Sustainable Tourist Destination.”

When planning to get away from it all, consider The Azores. Experience the landscapes and adventure activities, as well as the local cuisine of the islands, washed down with the best local wines.
