As the UK eases back on its COVID-19 regulations and the weather warms, it is a good time to plan a trip to historic and beautiful England. The fact that there are around 800 castles to choose from across the country makes it difficult to decide. However, here are five of the best castles to visit in England.
1. Dover Castle in England

Some are mostly historic and in a state of disrepair, while others, like Dover Castle, are truly impressive. Nestling in a large site, the castle isn’t the only piece of impressive history here. On the grounds are a Roman lighthouse, dating back some 2,000 years and a 1,000-year-old Anglo-Saxon church. Meanwhile, the tower of the castle itself has interiors, recreating life under King Henry II from 800 years ago. But that’s not all; the castle also features secret WWII tunnels, which point to the strategic importance of the castle. Meanwhile, the grounds of the castle offer panoramic views across the English Channel to France, making its importance truly clear.
2. Alnwick Castle in the UK

In fact, the view of the castle has hardly changed since the dukes first lived here. The fortress has a selection of towers and battlements to make its strategic importance clear. However, once inside, visitors can gaze at the grand Italian palazzo rooms, with their priceless paintings and beautiful furniture. However, you can also have a peek into the private life of the current duke. The library reveals family photos, a massive TV and comfy beanbags that make it look truly lived in. Readers might recognize the castle from the image above and for good reason. Alnwick Castle has starred in the popular Harry Potter movies and in some episodes of Downton Abbey.
3. Durham Castle, England
Durham is an English university city and is known for its architecture, including the magnificent cathedral of the city. However, Durham Castle is equally magnificent and stands directly across from the cathedral making for two great visits in one. Set in a World Heritage Site and dating back 900 years, the castle offers daily tours, which are great enough. However, it turns out the castle is student accommodation these days and if you visit out of school term, you can even spend the night here. Rooms range from basic to beautiful four-poster beds, most with beautiful views over the city.
4. Bodium Castle in the UK

The 14th-century castle still has its original gatehouse and round towers and is surrounded by the water-filled moat. While beautiful to look at, Bodium is mostly just that beautiful external stone shell and has little to see inside. However, just viewing the castle from the outside is reward enough.
5. Leeds Castle in England

Here, visitors can experience 900 years of varied history and great architectural beauty. While originally a Norman fortification, the castle was subsequently owned by a number of queens. Meanwhile, it later became a gorgeous Georgian mansion that was restored in the 20th century by an Anglo-American heiress, Lady Baillie. Walking the halls of Leeds Castle, it is easy to imagine the lady entertaining her high society friends. However, that’s not all, as the gardens surrounding the castle are equally beautiful and include a maze.
