The former Hotel Los Alamos in Torremolinos is getting a new lease on life, as it will be replaced with an energy-efficient hotel targeted at digital nomads. The mayor of the Costa del Sol town presented plans for the new Oceanika complex at the recent Fitur conference.

New energy-efficient hotel in Torremolinos for digital nomads

The recent pandemic changed the way many people worked, as they did so at home during lockdowns. Once the lockdowns were over, many workers chose to continue working remotely at home. Moreover, this then started the trend of digital nomads, who found that they not only work from home but could do so from any suitable location in the world.

The Costa del Sol town of Torremolinos in southern Spain is cashing in on the new trend by building a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient hotel, targeted at remote workers. The town’s mayor, Margarita del Cid, introduced plans for the new Oceanika complex recently at Fitur. The event is a global meeting point for tourism professionals and is a leading trade fair, hosted by Ifema Madrid and running through January 28, 2024.

Meanwhile, the Oceanika complex will replace the former Hotel Los Alamos with an energy-efficient living space for digital nomads.

Urban regeneration in Spain

While Torremolinos was a popular destination in the past, Del Cid wants to make improvements. Sur in English quotes her saying Torremolinos is “committed to urban regeneration,” saying:

We believe that our municipality has a lot of room to improve and update public and private spaces to make them more attractive and more useful to citizens.

The new project has been designed by the Nuovit investment group and will be located at the entrance to Torremolinos. Del Cid said it will be “very visible” and will have a “target audience of digital nomads.”

Moreover, the major thanked Nuovit for the new project, claiming that this represents a commitment to aesthetic improvement and urban regeneration. Del Cid adding that it will be a gateway to professionals in the field of innovation and new technologies.

Meanwhile, Luis Acacio Ortega, the deputy general manager of Nuovit, explained that Malaga is the “second-best city in the world from which to work remotely.” Describing the good weather, welcoming attitude of the locals and gastronomy, the city already stands out from other destinations for digital nomads. Now, Torremolinos intends to catch up with Malaga City with its own project.

About the Oceanika project in Torremolinos

Oceanika is planned to become the largest co-living complex in the Malaga province and will feature 180 apartments. Each will have a balcony to improve ventilation and enhance the natural light inside.

Moreover, the apartments will function according to the “flex living” concept. This allows people the flexibility to choose their length of stay. Meanwhile, they can choose to stay anything from a few weeks to several months without long-term contracts or large deposits. The stay includes cleaning, Wi-Fi and security.

Besides the modern apartments, communal areas are planned, including co-working and leisure spaces to encourage digital nomads to socialize, and a gym for them to work out.

Eco-friendly accommodation for digital nomads

Most importantly, the new complex includes efforts to reduce the environmental impact. The complex will be constructed with environmentally friendly building materials. It will also utilize a responsible use of water, as well as solar panels and charging points for electric vehicles.
