North Rim in Grand Canyon to reopen for summer

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon tends to be less visited by travelers, but the park is hoping to change that soon. North Rim was closed to overnight visitors in October and its entrance gate closed around a month later. However, from May 15, it will once again welcome visitors from 6 am.

According to the National Park Service, the opening will include multiple visitor services to attract more visitors. These include lodging, camping, food and beverage services, retail options and the gas station.

From May 15, the Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim will also be open, offering comfortable accommodations. Moreover, the lodge’s dining room is set to offer visitors delicious, home-made hearty breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The National Park Service wrote in a Facebook post:

Get ready to experience the breathtaking beauty of the Grand Canyon’s North Rim as we kick off the 2024 season on Wednesday, May 15 at 6 a.m.!

Mark your calendars — the 2024 season runs until October 15, so make sure to plan your visit before then!

Meanwhile, the National Park Service said that once the North Rim is open, it will remain available for day visits until November 30, or until “winter conditions prevail.” Moreover, the Backcountry Information Office will be open through October 31.

Visitors can also enjoy daily Park Ranger programs until October 15, at the Roaring Springs Overlook Kiosk.

About the North Rim of the Grand Canyon

For those who have yet to visit, this area of the Grand Canyon is close to the Arizona-Utah border and receives less visitors than the easier-accessible South Rim. However, it is worth the effort, as travelers can enjoy breathtaking views from lookout points, the Redwall Bridge and Bright Angel Point.

However, once the North Rim closes for the season, travelers can still access it for backcountry camping, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing with a backcountry permit.

Meanwhile, in 2023, the reopening was delayed after record-setting snowfalls in the park of more than 250 inches. Moreover, the more crowded and popular South Rim is open all year round.
