Ahead of spring break travel, the US State Department reissued a Level 2 travel advisory for Americans visiting Turks and Caicos in the Caribbean. Level 2 urges American travelers to “exercise increased caution” when visiting the popular Caribbean destination. Meanwhile, other popular destinations ranked as Level 2 include France, Italy, Spain and the UK. Now, tourism officials have responded to the travel advisory.

After the advisory’s reissue, officials from Experience Turks and Caicos and the Ministry of Tourism have acknowledged the update. However, they are putting the advisory into a better context for travelers.

In a press release, the tourism organizations pointed out that the advisory, which has maintained a Level 2 status since July 2023, does not discourage travel to Turks and Caicos.

Reportedly, the only modification to the recent update relates to illegal firearm offenses, which underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining strict firearm regulations for the protection of locals and visitors alike. Meanwhile, the latest update allows courts to impose proportionally consistent fines and custodial sentences for such offenses. It isn’t about deadly shootings on the islands – in fact, it is the opposite.

The Level 2 advisory’s update warns travelers of the Caribbean nation’s strict firearms and ammunition laws, which have led to severe penalties for American visitors.

According to USA Today, even a single bullet found in a traveler’s baggage, whether brought on purpose or by mistake, can lead to immediate arrest, lengthy detention, and potential jail sentences of 12 years or more. Moreover, some American travelers have been unable to leave Turks and Caicos for weeks after being caught with ammunition at the airport.

Hon. Zhavago Jolly, the Minister of Tourism in Turks and Caicos, said of the update:

We are committed to ensuring that every visitor enjoys a safe, secure, and seamless vacation in our ‘Beautiful by Nature’ destination. While the advisory has not changed in its overall assessment, it reinforces the importance of our strict firearm regulations, which are in place to protect both residents and visitors.

We continue to work closely with law enforcement, tourism stakeholders, and international partners to maintain our reputation as a safe, world-class destination.

We encourage all visitors to stay informed, exercise basic travel precautions, and carefully check their luggage to avoid any inadvertent issues. Our goal is for every traveler to fully enjoy their time here, knowing that Turks and Caicos remains one of the safest and most desirable vacation spots in the Caribbean.
