5 Reasons to Visit Wellington, New Zealand

Wellington is New Zealand’s capital. It’s a small, hip city on the coast of the country’s North Island. In 2014 and 2015, I lived in Wellington for six months and fell in love with the city! Here are some of my favorite things about Wellington.

    1. MUSEUMS

If you’re in Wellington on a rainy day, you have plenty of museums that will keep you entertained! Wellington is home to Te Papa, New Zealand’s national museum. Te Papa is a six-story free museum! Other gems include the National Tattoo Museum of New Zealand, Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History, Wellington Museum, and Wellington Tramway Museum.
    2. COFFEE CULTURE

Locals take coffee very seriously! CNN recently named Wellington one of the top cities in the world for a cup of coffee. Walk down Courtenay Place or Cuba Street in the city center, and you’ll find countless cafes. Or if you want to enjoy coffee by the beach, step into Maranui Café at Lyall Bay Beach or Scorch-O-Rama at Scorching Bay Beach.

    3. FOOD
Just like yours truly, locals love brunch! There are countless cafes around the city where you can order a delicious stack of pancakes, crispy bacon, or some vegan muffins. I recommend Maranui Café, where you can enjoy the view of Lyall Bay Beach.People from all around the world, particularly Asia, immigrate to Wellington. As a result, you can find a plethora of restaurants with authentic cuisine. Walk down Cuba Street and you’ll find amazing Indian, Thai, Chinese, and Japanese food.
    4. BEACHES

Wellington has some of the most unique beaches I’ve ever visited. Not only is the water a gorgeous, deep shade of blue, but every beach provides you with a great view of the mountains. Some of my favorite beaches include Lyall Bay, Island Bay, Makara, and Scorching Bay Beaches. Each beach has its own draws. Lyall Bay is a great place to surf. Island Bay is the prime fishing spot in Wellington. Makara is a good place to go for a light hike. Scorching Bay is relaxing.

  1. SCENERY

There are two great spots for a 360-degree view of the city. First, you can take a short hike up Mount Victoria. Second, you can take a light hike up Mount Kaukau. Wellington is a city surrounded by water and mountains, so the scenery is breathtaking!
