After more than two years of the pandemic, visitors are heading to Italy, visiting Rome, Venice and Milan. Who can blame them? Each has beautiful architecture, rich culture and gastronomy, but they also have too many visitors. For those travelers who want to enjoy the best of Italy without the crowds, there is one area that is perfect and it’s even giving away free train tickets and discounts on attractions. Read on to find out what Friuli-Venezia Giulia has to offer a visitor to Italy.
Friuli-Venezia Giulia offers free train tickets and discounts
When many people think of Italy, they immediately think of booking a ticket to Rome, Venice, or Milan. While these destinations rightfully deserve attention, with everyone getting back into travel again, the popular locations are crowded. Meanwhile, Friuli-Venezia Giulia is a lesser-known corner of Northern Italy, with all the same charms, but is relatively crowd-free.
Meanwhile, the region knows it has everything to offer visitors and is now doing its best to attract new travelers. In fact, should you visit, they will even give you free train tickets and generous discounts on attractions.
Recently, Spain and Germany have offered free or discounted train tickets. Italy is also getting in on the deal. How can you say no?
Where is it?
Tucked beside Austria and Slovenia in Northern Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia has many charms, including the Dolomite Mountains, golden sandy coasts and sprawling vineyards. In order to encourage more international travelers to visit, the region is offering free train fares and other complimentary perks. Meanwhile, you don’t have to rush to make a booking, as the offer is valid until May 31, 2023.
According to the local tourism board, all inbound train journeys to four major cities in the region will be refunded. These include some beauties – Trieste, Grado, Udine and Lignano Sabbiadoro. However, that isn’t all; this generous initiative also includes a complimentary FGVcard, valid for 48 hours. This card gives free or discounted access to public transport, as well as museums, guided tours to historical sites and more attractions. These include Banksy’s in Salone degli Incanti (open from November 25 to April 10, 2023) and more.
Visit Trieste in Friuli-Venezia Giulia
Trieste, the capital of the region, is a border town with a perfectly restored old town. Here, visitors can enjoy a wine-tasting tour, exploring some of Europe’s best white wines.
Alternatively, history lovers can explore Roman relics, or head to Grado, a quieter version of Venice with its beautiful canals. Meanwhile, beach lovers can head to Lignano Sabbiadoro for its gorgeous beaches.
What’s the catch?
There isn’t really a catch, as such, but there are certain package conditions to receive these benefits as follows:
- Bookings can only be made on Trenitalia
- Travelers must stay a minimum of two nights in Friuli-Venezia Giulia in any participating hotel, B&B, or holiday apartment.
- Visitors must also purchase return tickets, departing from within Italy’s borders at any of the five stations on the Trenitalia Line. These are Latisana-Lignano-Bibione, Cervignano-Aquileia-Grado, Trieste Airport, Trieste Centrale, or Udine.
Meanwhile, it is important to note that reservations must be made no later than five days before departure. It must also be borne in mind that accommodation costs are not included, nor are first-class train tickets.
There are also certain dates on the calendar when the offer is not available, namely Christmas, Easter and Italian bank holidays.
