Up until today, Spain was the only European country that still had travel restrictions in place for non-EU visitors. However, on October 21, 2022, Spain finally dropped all its remaining travel restrictions, including for UK citizens.
Spain drops remaining travel restrictions for non-EU travelers
While other EU nations gradually dropped their COVID-19 travel restrictions, Spain held on until today. From October 21, 2022, neither EU nor non-EU citizens are required to show proof of vaccination, recovery, or a negative PCR test. Moreover, visitors are no longer required to fill out a health control form prior to travel.
According to the Spanish government health website, “All COVID-19 travel restrictions for travelers to Spain have been lifted. The rules that previously applied to travelers coming to Spain no longer apply.”
During September, Spain dropped entry regulations for anyone traveling from the EU or Schengen area. However, at that stage, the UK, US and other third-country citizens were still subject to the restrictions. Initially, it was thought the regulations would carry on until mid-November, but they have now been lifted earlier than expected.
Popular European destination
This news is especially good for UK citizens as they are heading for a half-term school holiday, making it a perfect time to enjoy the continuing warm weather in the south. Meanwhile, Spain, with its historical heritage, blue flag beaches and delicious cuisine made it the second-most visited country prior to the pandemic. Moreover, for British vacationers, it has been popular for many years.
Meanwhile, Spain is now added to the list of EU nations completely dropping their travel restrictions. The country follows Luxembourg, which also dropped its regulations recently.
Planning a trip to Spain?
For anyone planning a visit to Spain, read on to find out the latest rules for travelers visiting the country.
Previously, visitors were required to show proof of vaccination, a recovery certificate or a negative PCR test, via the EU Digital COVID Certificate (EUDCC) or Health Control Form. However, this requirement has been abolished entirely. In fact, all international travelers are welcome, regardless of their vaccination status. This means that UK citizens are free to enter the country, restriction-free.
However, travelers are still encouraged to exercise caution to stem the possible spread of the virus. In fact, Spanish local and regional restrictions may be introduced on short notice, meaning it is best to check prior to travel.
Are face masks required?
By Spanish royal decree, face masks are no longer required in most settings, including bars, cafes, restaurants, museums and cinemas. However, they are required in some incidences, so travelers should always make sure they carry a mask with them.
Currently, masks are still required on public transport (buses, trains, taxis, metro and airplanes), as well as in medical centers, hospitals, nursing homes and pharmacies. When it comes to ferries, masks are only required if a 1.5-meter (5-ft) distance cannot be maintained indoors.
Keep updated before traveling
However, Spain is a big country, and also has the Canary and Balearic Islands, and North African territories. For this reason, domestic rules can vary depending on the region, so always check the latest requirements for your destination.
