Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK) – mega airport in Warsaw, Poland
While work is set to start by the end of 2023, construction will take some time with the airport anticipated to be operational by 2028. This is due to the fact that not only will the new airport hub have to be built, but other facilities will also need to be built. It is believed that the airport will include the construction of its own train station, which will then be connected to the current Polish rail network, as well as a bus terminal.
Not only will the actual airport hub have to be built, but certain facilities will have to be incorporated. This is believed to include the construction of its own train station which will subsequently need to be connected to the current Polish rail network.
Why build a new airport?
According to a report from the Centre for Aviation, those travelers currently have a choice of 16 airports that offer direct flights to international long-haul destinations. This is a low figure as compared to the more than 60 in Western Europe.
Meanwhile, the new airport hub will be placed at the forefront of international air travel, along with Dubai International Airport and London Heathrow. It is anticipated that by 2035, the airport will be capable of handling up to 40 million passengers each year. Moreover, by 2060, this will increase to 65 million passengers, with the addition of three parallel runways.
As noted by Simple Flying, the CEO of LOT told Bloomberg, “Central Europe needs a proper aviation hub. We are going to be part of planning it and building it.”
What will Centralny Port Komunikacyjny offer?
Initially, work on the new airport was scheduled to start in 2021, but was pushed back to 2023 by the pandemic. Meanwhile, Foster + Partners and Buro Happold unveiled the plans earlier this year. Moreover, the hub is designed by the world-renowned British architect, Sir Norman Foster, who has revealed CGI images of the planned facilities. Readers can see the images in the video included here.
Grant Brooker, head of studio at Foster + Partners spoke of the design, saying:
Our design focuses on passengers. Our ambition is to create an accessible building that will improve the travel experience through clear visual connections.
We believe the CPK will completely change the way people travel around Poland, and will also become a new gateway to Europe and the rest of the world.
