While Los Cabos is a popular Mexican destination on the southern tip of Baja California, another gem is located close by. Just 62 miles further up the coast, La Paz is a vibrant seaside destination with much to offer. Baja California’s state capital has much to offer travelers, especially with its year-round warm temperatures. Even in winter, the area is perfect for all water sports, or simply paddling in the waves.

In La Paz and its surroundings, visitors will be thrilled by the clear, blue waters and lush, green mangroves set in what is otherwise a desert landscape. Meanwhile, there is an abundance of marine life in the Sea of Cortez, dubbed “the aquarium of the world” by none other than Jacques Cousteau.

Moreover, the waters off La Paz host 39 percent of the world’s marine mammals, as well as more than 800 species of fish. While many species are migratory, a visit here in summer could easily reveal oceanic mantas and mobula rays, as well as various types of sharks, sea lions, dolphins and more.

As mentioned above, an area of La Paz is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In fact, Espíritu Santo is one of the area’s gems, with its sorbet-pink cliffs and shallow, clean azure waters. Meanwhile, the World Heritage Site consists of 244 Sea of Cortez islands, as well as coastal areas, well worth a day trip or two. A number of tour operators in La Paz organize activities here, including snorkeling and kayaking.

According to UNESCO, the site hosts 695 vascular plant species, more than in any other location on the World Heritage List. Meanwhile, it is home to an amazing number of 891 fish species, 90 of which are endemic. Moreover, the world heritage site is home to 39 percent of the world’s marine animals, as well as a third of the world’s marine cetacean species.
