Solo travel is one of the current trends for those taking a vacation, traveling the world alone. There is no age limit and many people have taken this up to experience their destinations fully. For those who have yet to try it out, Kayak has revealed the top US cities for solo travel in the fall of 2024.

Solo travel grows in the US

In recent years, the trend of solo travel has soared with many travelers ignoring their fear and booking vacations alone.  Meanwhile, Kayak runs searches worldwide to help make confident decisions about travel locations, offering the perfect flights, hotels, rental cars and vacation packages.

The platform has now revealed the top five cities in the US for solo travelers this fall while giving each city a score on a scale from 1 to 100.

1. Washington DC

Top of the list is Washington DC, which is no real surprise. Besides politics, the city is a year-round location for solo travelers wanting to explore its many museums, while staying in affordable hotels and dining in underrated restaurants.

Moreover, exploring the city is no big issue as it is among the most walkable cities in the US, with many attractions best experienced when strolling through the city. For these reasons, Washington DC earned a perfect Kajak score of 100/100.

2. Boston, Massachusetts

While not truly walkable like Washington DC, Boston does offer small-town vibes in many fascinating and historic neighborhoods. Solo travelers can explore the city’s many museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

For those who love marine life, the New England Aquarium is just waiting to be explored.  Moreover, while green in the summer, Boston’s parks are perfect for their fall foliage. Boston earned a Kayak score of 74/100.

3. Chicago, Illinois

Known as the “Windy City,” Chicago is an exciting destination for solo travel with endless attractions to explore. The city’s public transport makes it easy to navigate, while its architecture features iconic skyscrapers like the 1,451-ft Willis Town and the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower. Moreover, Chicago has many museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, with its Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works. Meanwhile, the city offers top-rated restaurants and affordable hotels. Kayak gave the city a score of 65/100.

4. Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta is the capital of Georgia and a place of history where solo travelers can visit the Atlanta History Center and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. Meanwhile, the downtown Centennial Olympic Park was built for the 1996 Olympics, but today is a major center for entertainment.

Meanwhile, Atlanta was recently named the most affordable major city in America, a fact that Kayak backs up over categories like hotels, flights and dining. For this reason, the city boasts a Kayak score of 65/100.

5. Salt Lake City, Utah

Many travelers head to Salt Lake City to access Zion National Park. However, the city itself is so much more than that. This Utah city has turned into one of the trendiest US destinations. Backed by amazing snowcapped mountains, Salt Lake City enjoyed record tourism in 2023 and it is likely to do the same in 2024. Moreover, it is considered to be one of the top US destinations for solo travel.

Lone travelers can enjoy the scenic hiking trails surrounding the city, and the affordable stays and dining. The highest ranking of 54/100 on Kayak’s scale is highlighted by some of the best and most affordable hotels at less than $200 per night.
