A Weekend In Jekyll Island, Georgia
If you are looking to explore the southern states this summer, there are several reasons why you should consider visiting Jekyll Island, off the coast of Georgia. Situated just a little south of historic Savannah, Jekyll Island is the premier destination for local residents and southerners who want to escape Atlanta’s city life and beat the humidity under the sun in one of the most charming, laid-back islands in the area.
Jekyll Island is also a place that was once the playground for the rich and famous during the Victorian-era. As a matter of fact, in the late 1800s, the island was an exclusive hunting club for families with names like Rockefeller, Morgan, Vanderbilt, Pulitzer, and Baker. In other words, it was the premier destination for Wall Street’s elite. The once private retreat is now part of The Jekyll Island Club National Historic Landmark District, one of the largest preservation projects in the southeast.
Today, families from all across the south visit this quaint summer island every year. Visiting the islands near Brunswick is a treat for just about any kind of traveler, whether you go solo, with your significant other or as a family. That’s because both Saint Simons Island and Jekyll Island have something to offer everyone. If you are looking for a relaxing, quiet getaway where you can just relax under the sun and dip your toes in the sand, Jekyll Island is perfect. Or if you are looking for both educational activities and a few ideas on how to keep active as a family, you can explore the island by car, foot, or bicycle. Jekyll Island is small enough that you can see everything there is needed to be seen within a 2-mile perimeter.

Some of the island’s highlights include Driftwood Beach, where you can see the bare bones of sea-washed trees at the northeast tip of the island. You can also visit Georgia’s only rescue and rehabilitation facility to learn about endangered sea turtles. When the turtles hatch in August, the center gives hatchling walks at dark a few times a week. You can also take a historic tour in and around the National Landmark Historic District and pay a call to William and Almira Rockefeller’s spacious vacation home. The Rockefellers remained devoted to the Jekyll Island Club for 36 years as their getaway island of choice.
In addition, Holiday Inn Resort is offering a special package for families looking to spend some time on the island this summer. Starting at $229 a night, their special includes a great family-friendly package that gives you deluxe overnight accommodations at the oceanfront resort, two tickets to the Summer Waves Water Park, bicycle rentals for two and breakfast at the hotel’s Beach House restaurant. If you have more members in your family, the packages can be modified for additional guests. The offer is valid until September 9th.
Other accommodation choices and nearby resorts include Jekyll Island Club Hotel, The Westin, and the Hampton Inn and Suites, which sits off the ocean behind the dunes with each access and gathering areas for families. The Westin is conveniently located next to the Village Green, with plenty of shops, a country mart, and different restaurants to choose from.
