Have An Authentic Arctic Experience In An Igloo

Have An Authentic Arctic Experience In An IglooAnyone who ever wanted the experience of sleeping in an igloo can enjoy an authentic Arctic experience in Greenland in January.

There is something fascinating about the idea of sleeping in an igloo – a home crafted from ice. The Igloo Lodge in Ilulissat offers an opportunity to do just that, staying in one of its six, traditional, hand-built houses made from ice. This experience is available again from January 2021.

A Stay In An Igloo

For those who have always wondered what it is like to sleep in an igloo, made from solid ice, now is your chance to find out. The Igloo Lodge in Ilulissat, Greenland is about to offer the opportunity again to stay one of their hand-crafted igloos between January and April next year.

Each of the six igloos is crafted to comfortably sleep two guests and the lodge is the ideal location for couples, or groups of up to 12 persons. Despite the fact that the igloo is made from ice, there is no need to be concerned about feeling cold. Each igloo comes with specialist winter sleeping bags, warm reindeer skins and a petroleum lamp for light on the night table. Even though outside temperatures are likely to drop well below freezing, each igloo remains at around zero degrees Celsius, which means sleeping with the specialist outdoor equipment is more than comfortable.

Other Facilities On Site

Besides the igloos, a wooden cabin on the site offers bathroom facilities, as well as a communal area where meals are served. Arctic travel specialists, Off the Map Travel say sleeping in an igloo strips back the luxury to help bring guests back to nature. The company has a number of tailor-made travel itineraries that include not only a stay at the Igloo Lodge. They also offer snowmobiling, snowshoeing and two, great Northern Lights safaris.

Experiencing the Northern Lights is a magical affair. The company offers a number of ways to experience what is technically called the Aurora Borealis. One way is to head into the polar night on a dog sled, where you can learn to mush and navigate the dogs yourself as you head through the forests, searching for the Northern Lights in the dark night sky. Other options for traveling to the spot are ATV and bubble sled tours. On certain photographic tours, you can learn how to capture images of the colorful splendor in the sky yourself. Nothing is more Instagrammable that this!

Arctic Adventures

Off the Map Travel’s founder, Jonny Cooper, says the best Arctic adventures are all about “experiencing authentic moments and creating lifelong memories.” According to Cooper, their offer delivers on both. Cooper says, “As soon as you enter the igloo you can see the craftsmanship that goes into its creation, a skill that’s been passed down through the generations. And then to lie back and sleep there, just as Innuits have done for thousands of years before, is a really special moment.”

The Igloo Lodge has been closed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. However, they are reopening for business again from January 27 until April 8, 2021. Visit the official website for more information.
