This past weekend saw Norwegian Cruise Line christen its newest ship Norwegian Prima in Reykjavik, Iceland. In fact, they made history as the first cruise ship to be christened in Iceland’s capital. More than 2,500 guests enjoyed an immersive experience at the launch of the first of six ships in the groundbreaking Prima Class.

Speaking at the event, Frank Del Rio, President and Chief Executive Officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said: “With her stunning design and unique offerings, Norwegian Prima is in a league of her own,” adding:

As the industry’s most spacious new cruise ship featuring ‘only-available-on-Prima-experiences,’ she is continuing NCL’s legacy of industry firsts. We wanted to launch Norwegian Prima in a location just as special and unique as she is, and Reykjavik’s striking landscape is the perfect setting for such a milestone occasion. We thank the Reykjavik community for welcoming us with open arms.

About the new ship

The Prima class ship has a length of 965 feet with a capacity for 3,100 guests at double occupancy. This gives Norwegian Prima the highest staffing levels and space ratio of any modern or premium cruise ship. Meanwhile, the ship has a wide variety of suite categories available with NCL’s ultra-premium keycard-only access.

Moreover, she boasts an amazing range of recreational activities including the fastest slides at sea – The Rush and The Drop. For more fun, the Prima Speedway is the first three-level racetrack on a cruise ship for adrenaline action.

For more relaxed enjoyment, the Ocean Boulevard is a 44,000 sq ft outdoor walkway, wrapping around the ship. Meanwhile, The Concourse features a multi-million dollar outdoor sculpture garden for total relaxation. Moreover, the expansive pool decks and infinity pools at Infinity Beach are perfect to slow down and cool off.

About the christening of Norwegian Prima

Guests at the christening ceremony in Reykjavik enjoyed a performance by the Icelandic group, Daði og Gagnamagnið (pronounced “Dah-they Oh Gack-no-Mak-ne”). Next on the program was Katy Perry, the ship’s own godmother, who took to the main stage to officially name and christen the vessel with a champagne bottle break across the ship’s hull.

Guests were then treated to an amazing performance of some of Perry’s chart-topping hits. Among these were Teenage Dream, California Gurls, Firework and Roar.

Speaking of the event, Katy said:

It was so much fun to sprinkle some fairy godmother dust on Norwegian Prima and send her on her way to sail the high seas.

I always appreciate a family vacation and a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so I was happy to wish all the vacationing guests a happy bon voyage!

Naturally, there will be plenty of entertainment on Norwegian Prima herself, as per the video below.

It won’t be long until the first passengers board Norwegian Prima for its inaugural voyages. The Prima class ship will head to Northern Europe from the Netherlands, Denmark and England starting September 3, 2022.

The next step will see the ship heading to the USA to collect passengers to head out to the Caribbean from New York City, Galveston, Texas and Miami in October and November. She will then stop in her homeports of Port Canaveral, Florida, and Galveston, Texas, for the 2023 and 2024 cruise seasons.
