At the grand final gala in Oman on Friday night, Vietnam was named the Leading Heritage Destination by the World Travel Awards. In fact, the Asian country beat out some huge contenders, including Armenia, Brazil, Egypt, Greece, Japan and Saudi Arabia. Read on to find out more about Vietnam’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

World Travel Awards: Vietnam’s World Heritage Sites

Of all the Asian nations, one that sometimes gets overlooked is Vietnam, but it should really be on everyone’s bucket list for several reasons.

Among the World Heritage Sites recognized by UNESCO is the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, My Son Sanctuary, Hoi An ancient town (pictured top) and the Complex of Hue Monuments in central Vietnam. Others include Ha Long Bay, Trang An Landscape Complex, Thang Long Imperial Citadel and Ho Dynasty Citadel in the northern region of the country.

Besides the latest World Travel Award, these important heritage sites and other locations in Vietnam have recently won much acclaim from prestigious travel magazines. In fact, this year, Hanoi has also been acclaimed as the world’s leading city break destination in 2022.

Cultural tourist attractions

Among Vietnam’s cultural attractions is Sun World Fansipan Legend. This consists of a compound of cultural tourist attractions in Sa Pa. Meanwhile, the attraction has been recognized for the fourth year in a row as the World’s Leading Cultural Tourist Attraction and World’s Leading Natural Landscape Tourist Attraction.

Meanwhile, Sun World Ba Na Hills in Da Nang also nabbed three awards. One is the World’s Leading Iconic Tourist Bridge for its famous Golden Bridge. At 150 meters (492 ft) in length and 12.8 meters (42 ft) wide, the bridge was designed as giant hands, constructed of mesh wire and fiberglass. However, this attraction was also recognized as the World’s Leading Cable Car Ride and the World’s Leading Iconic Tourist Attraction.

Meanwhile, two hotels and one resort in the Sun Group, with its two theme parks, were also honored at the World Travel Awards.

Hotel de la Coupole – MGallery (Sa Pa) received an award for being the World’s Leading Design Hotel. InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort (Da Nang) was honored as the World’s Leading Green Resort. Meanwhile, JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort was named the World’s Leading Luxury Wedding Resort.

Speaking at the event, Dang Minh Truong, Chairman of the Sun Group said:

These awards will be a source of inspiration for Sun Group to bring Vietnamese people quality and distinctive projects, as well as contribute to raising and affirming Vietnam’s tourism position in the world.

World Travel Awards

According to VnExpress, the World Travel Awards was established in 1993 in order to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence in all spheres of travel, hospitality and tourism industries.

In fact, the Wall Street Journal has dubbed the award “The Oscar of the Travel Industry.” It was also noted that businesses and destinations honored by the awards have many implications for national tourism development.

As 2022 comes to a close, it is time to make plans to visit Vietnam in 2023.
