Exciting news has come from Mexico as local authorities confirm that the long-awaited Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport in Tulum will finally start operations this winter. This means that US travelers will be able to fly nonstop to the historic city from three American cities. This will mark the first time international travelers will be able to fly direct to Tulum without having to stop in Cancun first before taking a two-hour ground transfer to the city.

While previously it was known that the airport would open on December 1, official confirmation for the first international flights had yet to be announced. Finally, the news is out that routes will open from the following American cities direct to Tulum.

– Fly Atlanta to Tulum on Delta

Delta is already known for its great connectivity with Mexican locations and has now been the first to confirm nonstop flights to the historic city on the Mayan Riviera. Itineraries start on March 28, 2024, at the end of the peak tourism season in Mexico. From that time, customers will be able to fly to Tulum from the airline’s hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL).

Meanwhile, the daily service will be available year-round on a 160-seat Boeing 737-800. Moreover, passengers can choose between First Class (with a chef-curated meal and premium wine or beer), the airline’s Delta Comfort+ (with complimentary beverages and more leg room), or the plane’s main cabin.

If this isn’t exciting enough, all passengers will have access to 1,000 hours of entertainment via Delta Studio to make the 2h30-2h50 journey more enjoyable as well as free Wi-Fi. Tickets are priced for as little as $196 one way, with first-class tickets at $401. Find more information on Delta’s website here.

The following is the Delta timetable for Tulum:

  • Atlanta (ATL) to Tulum (TQO): departs 11:00 AM – landing 1:00 PM (daily)
  • Tulum (TQO) to Atlanta (ATL): departs 2:25 PM – landing 5:55 PM (daily)

– Spirit Airlines from Fort Lauderdale and Orlando

The first US-based low-cost airline offering service to and from Tulum is Spirit Airlines. Initially, Spirit has chosen two key cities in Florida, namely Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. As with Delta, flights will start in late March 2024 for Floridians heading for a Mexican getaway without having to head to Cancun first.

Meanwhile, Spirit will offer year-round daily flights at ultra-affordable fares, starting at $140 for standard economy. Ironically, launch-date fares on Spirit’s official website are crazily expensive, with the cheapest selling for $497 one way.

This is likely due to a spike in demand for Tulum vacations after the announcement of the Fort Lauderdale and Orlando flights. It is probably best to wait a while before booking your flight later in 2024 to benefit from the lower fares promised by the airline.

Readers can see the Fort Lauderdale and Orlando timetables here:
