Over the spring break season, the US State Department only issued a few travel advisories for March. However, for those travelers heading overseas in the coming weeks, you might need to know these travel advisories before booking that flight. Read on to find out which countries you should be aware of.

Latest travel advisories for March 2024

After a relatively quiet spring break, those who didn’t travel then could be planning an international vacation now. While the US State Department only had a few warnings for that time, anyone traveling now should take note of the latest guidance for travelers. Here, the most important travel advisories are listed from Level 1 through Level 3. Be aware that warnings are for certain areas of that country.

The Kyrgyz Republic – Level 1

First announced on March 8, travelers should exercise normal precautions in the Kyrgyz Republic. However, those traveling to the border region with Tajikistan should be aware of potential violent border clashes. The US State Department writes as follows:

Reconsider travel to areas within approximately 30 kilometers of the border with Tajikistan due to intermittent cross-border tensions and violent clashes. Armed violence may occur with little or no warning. Travelers are at heightened risk of injury or death when visiting or transiting that region.

Ecuador – Level 2

When visiting Ecuador, American travelers should exercise increased caution due to civil unrest, kidnapping and other crimes. This state of emergency was announced earlier in 2024. According to the US State Department, American travelers should specifically avoid Guayaquil south of Portete de Tarqui Avenue.

They should also avoid the cities of Huaquillas and Arenillas in El Oro Province. Moreover, travel advisories also apply to the cities of Pueblo Viejo, Quevedo and Quinsaloma in Los Province. Other areas to avoid include the canton of Duran in Guayas Province and Esmaraldas city. But that’s not all, as travelers should also avoid all areas north of Esmeraldas city due to crime.

Moldova – Level 2

Heading to Europe, American travelers are also urged to exercise increased caution in Moldova. This is due to unresolved conflict between the breakaway Transnistria region and the central government. Meanwhile, American travelers should be aware of the nearby armed conflict in Ukraine. The US State Department wrote on March 14:

Approximately 100,000 refugees are residing in Moldova as a result of Russia’s war in Ukraine, but there has been no military spillover into Moldova from the conflict. As of December 2023, the Moldovan government has ended its State of Emergency. The Chisinau airport is operating normally although there are no flights available to or from Belarus, Russia or Ukraine.

Rwanda – Level 3

Travelers are urged to exercise normal precautions in Rwanda, but some areas do have increased risk. Moreover, they should exercise increased caution at the Rwanda-Burundi border due to armed violence. Reconsider travel to the Rwanda-Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) border, also due to armed violence.

When traveling the balance of this month and going into April 2024, the best plan is to check the latest status on the US State Department website to ensure safety.
