Universal Reveals Plans to Build New Theme Park In The UK

Universal Destinations & Experiences has revealed plans to build a new theme park just outside Bedford in the UK. The BBC reported that Universal first announced in 2024 that it was conducting “feasibility and due diligence studies” for constructing a new theme park in the UK, with the results providing the company with confidence to proceed with its plans.

While the project is currently subject to planning approval, officials from Universal are already moving forward with its plans to start construction in 2026. Meanwhile, back in 2023, the theme park brand purchased a 476-acre property just outside of Bedford in the UK.
Comcast President Mike Cavanagh said:
This is a special and historic milestone moment for our company as we continue to accelerate the growth trajectory of our theme parks business and delight audiences around the world.
The unparalleled storytelling and technological innovation that the incredible team at Universal Destinations & Experiences brings to life is a perfect complement to the British creative arts and tourism industries.
Benefits of the theme park to the UK
In addition to the new theme park with its multiple themed lands, Universal also unveiled plans to build a 500-room hotel and a retail, dining, and entertainment complex.
Universal Destinations & Experiences Chairman and CEO Mark Woodbury said:
Bringing the Universal brand to the United Kingdom is another exciting step forward in generating future growth.
Expanding into Europe presents us with a significant opportunity to reach new fans and share the incredible experiences our team creates.
Universal said a full planning proposal is to be submitted to the UK government, with construction expected to launch in 2026. Meanwhile, the company has already purchased 476 acres of land for the project, and could potentially buy more to increase the plot to around 700 acres, which will improve transport links.
Meanwhile, the BBC reported that residents in the surrounding villages have so far responded positively to the plans. However, some are concerned that the infrastructure will be insufficient to support the many expected visitors.
Universal has said it will make upgrades to the Wixams railway station, and build a new station on the East West Rail Line near the planned resort. Moreover, the entertainment provider will also add dedicated slip roads to the A421.
According to the Theme Index Report, Universal Orlando’s resort in Florida attracted 9.75 million visitors in 2023. Meanwhile, its Hollywood resort saw 9.66 million visitors in the same year. It is hoped that once the UK resort opens, it will attract similar numbers.
