United Kingdom Restaurant Travel Tips: Newman Arms Pie Room Review: One of the Oldest Restaurants in London - Delicious

My last day in London felt like a marathon. It began in my flat rental in Kennington and led me through checkpoints at the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, the London Eye, and Buckingham Palace. As is the norm in London, it was raining and I was greatly regretting my decision to pack only a pair of $10 Walmart shoes. By that evening, my clothes were soaked and my hair oddly groomed by the polluted rain. Feeling accomplished by the feat of the day, I was in dire need of warm shelter and food.

I came to London because of its history. So I had made the decision early on that my final meal in London would also have a historical tie. In London, there are a handful of restaurants that are over a century old. After filtering that list through my limited budget, I was left with very few. Luckily, the Newman Arms Pie Room had everything I was looking for. The building that houses Newman Arms was built in 1730. Since then, it’s been home to a tallow chandler, ironmonger, picture framers, and even used as a brothel. In 1860, Newman Arms was finally established as a pub. The Pie Room was added later on the second floor level.

Entering the building, I was humbled by the antiquated interior with rustic paintings and sounds of locals enjoying themselves. The light cider was a great starter to the excellent meal. I was in awe when they brought out the massive beef and Guinness pie topped with a puff pastry dome. Even considering its size, I devoured the tender chunks of beef swimming in a rich brown gravy and encaged in a flakey crust. You would think I’d be stuffed to my limits at this point but I hadn’t even started on dessert yet! For the finale, I ordered a spotted dick with custard and ice cream (why stop at just one?). I enjoyed the nice balance of the warm berry sponge pudding and cold ice cream. During this meal, calories and fat did not exist.

My server was a sweet Australian woman who seemed to form a bond with all the guests. Her kindness added to the charm of this 150 year old establishment and the best dining experience I had while in London.
