Travel Tips: Visiting Boston With A Family, What To Do & What To Avoid

I have to confess, this one’s going to be tough because I’ve spent four years of my life in Boston as college student. However, the first time I visited Boston was not as a student, but as a tourist, when I was still a teenager. Obviously, Boston is known as the college town for a reason, what with its numerous colleges inside the city as well as bordering the city.

But I’ve been asked so many times about what to do on a tourist visit to Boston that does not involve crashing frat parties or college parties that I thought about listing things you could do when you’re with your family or with children. Obviously, bars, clubs, and college parties are off the table. But Boston is a historical city full of amazing tourist spots and beautiful sights, so fret not.

First: Places to avoid. Do not venture out into the center of Northeastern University, Beacon Street, MIT, Harvard Square, the Boston University campus, Allston, or downtown Boston at night if you do not want to be accosted by drunk college students. Yes, they are generally very nice college kids in the city, but there are always belligerent drunks, especially at that time of the night with so many students together.

Second, there are tour buses that manage to take you to every major historical landmark and major shopping destination within the city, starting at the Prudential center. These buses are fairly cheap, and usually range from $15 to $40, depending on what package you choose.

Third, the Boston Common is a must, if only to say you’ve been to the Boston Commons.  Boston Commons is a central public park in Boston.  Dating from 1634, it is the oldest city park in the United States.  A visitors’ center for all of Boston is located on the Tremont Street side of the park.

I would also recommend the Fens if you love nature and quiet, but try not to go after dark or early morning as it can get a bit spooky and there are muggings reported at that time.

For shopping, the major destinations are obviously the Prudential Center, Copley, downtown Boston, and Harvard Square. There’s plenty of thrift stores or dollar stores if you know where to go, and China Town [near downtown] is a great place for amazing food and cheap shopping.

Of course, no mention of Boston would be complete without Fenway park.  The park has served as the home ballpark of the Boston Red Sox baseball team since it opened in 1912 and is the oldest Major League Baseball stadium in use.  If you’re going to make the trip to Boston and you’re looking for family friendly fun, you have to go to a Red Sox fame at the Fens. There’s nothing like the atmosphere and energy at these games, even if you don’t necessarily watch or enjoy Baseball.
