Top 10 Things to Do While Cruising

Most people select a cruise based on its ports of call. You know exactly what you want to do once you reach the beaches of Cozumel or glaciers of Alaska. But what about those “days at sea?” Sitting in a beach chair enjoying a good book and the sun may be enough for some, but for others there’s a need to fill that free time. Cruise lines are always hard at work to come up with creative and fun ways to keep guests happy on board. Here are ten ideas for things to do while you’re “at sea.”

1. Surfing. If you’re heading to a warm weather destination you can swim on a cruise, but depending on your cruise line, you may be able to surf too! Some cruise lines have invested in water features like a FlowRider system so guests can surf onboard! Other water features like splash pads and water slides keep the less daring occupied as well.

2. Movies: Having an onboard theatre isn’t new but many ships now offer giant outdoor projectors. Watch a film from the swimming pool or curled up in a pool chair under the stars.

3. Casino: For as long as cruise ships have been around gambling has been a popular onboard pastime. You’ll likely find table games, slot machines, and video poker available on any ship.

4. Internet Café: Few ships offer onboard WIFI however the internet café is still going strong. If you need to check in to work or see what’s happening with friends you’ll be able to.  Keep in mind access can be spotty and expensive so take this into consideration before sailing.

5. Planetarium: If you’re setting out on the Queen Mary 2, the ship has the world’s first ship board planetarium. If you’re not, then you’ll have to settle for looking at the stars from the top of the ship deck. Either way, it’s an impressive show.

6. Spa: For an additional fee you can indulge at the ship spa. Most lines have specials and discounts available for spa services so make sure to ask if you’re interested. Services vary from pedicures to mud baths and even Botox!

7. Ice Rinks: You can swim and ice skate in the same day! Many cruises have ice shows and offer passengers free-skate time when the shows aren’t running

8. Rock Climbing Walls: Imagine being suspended 50 feet in the air overlooking the cruise ship with open sea as far as you can see. If this sounds exhilarating you’ll want to brave the rock climbing wall.

9. Sports: Shuffleboard was once the only onboard sport available but on today’s cruise ships miniature golf, basketball, ping pong, tennis, and even street hockey can all be played onboard. Lace up your shoes and get into a game!

10. Classes: Why not learn a new skill while you’re at sea? Classes such as cupcake decorating, painting, or any number of other skills are often available. Cruise lines bring specialists onboard just to teach guests skills in a unique environment. You may have the chance to learn from a master!

Whatever your interests, the choices on cruise ships are endless.  There’s so many things to do you may not want to even leave the ship once you’ve reached a port!
