3 Unique Museums To Visit In Malaga, Spain

Nestled on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain, Malaga is an exciting mixture of historic and contemporary life. The new side of the port city offers the best in shopping, with quality boutiques, restaurants and shopping centers.

The historic side has many attractions, dating from Moorish and Roman times and more.
Among its many attractions, the capital of the Costa del Sol has many excellent museums to browse. The following are three of the top, unique museums to visit in Malaga, Spain.

1. MIMMA – Interactive Music Museum

The Interactive Music Museum is fun for the whole family. The museum is housed in an 18th-century palace and hosts a collection of musical instruments from all over the world. The museum houses a collection of around 1,000 instruments, of which 400 are on permanent exhibition. Compiled by Miguel Ángel Piédrola Orta, it is considered to be among the most important private collections in Europe.

Some of these instruments are historic, and many of them can be played. Located in the historic center of the city, the museum boasts a different experience from most museums. It shares the motto “please play” instead of the normal “Do not touch!”

Each area of the museum is interactive, with instruments to play and other resources to learn their history. It also hosts a number of cultural theme-based activities. Besides playing the instruments, visitors can attend lectures, concerts, screenings, jam sessions and master classes in all genres of music here. Many fun family activities are also held over the weekends.

2. Museum of Glass and Crystal

The Museo del Vidrio y Cristal is housed in a restored 18-century house in historic Malaga. The museum allows visitors to visit the history of humanity in the form of glass and crystal. The private collection has over 3,000 pieces of glass or crystal from various epochs, displayed with historic pictures, decorative objects and furniture from each historical period.

The museum was started in an effort to rehabilitate the old craftsman neighborhood of San Felipe Neri. It is also a reference center, showing artisan techniques over the ages, many of which have been lost in time.

Due to the fragile nature of the exhibits, the museum only offers guided tours. However, this is useful as you can learn about each piece as you go.

3. Malaga Automobile and Fashion Museum

The Museo Automovilístico de Málaga is a unique museum, housed in a historic building known as “La Tabacalera.” This is a spacious former tobacco warehouse, with plenty of room for the exhibits. Visitors can browse 13 thematic rooms here, each relating to a particular artistic period, dating from the nineteenth century to the present.

The exclusive, beautifully restored vehicles are part of a private collection and include models like Hispano Suiza, Mercedes, Bentley, Ferrari, Bugatti and Rolls-Royce. Many are upholstered in mink fur and ostrich feathers, with features like a mother-of-pearl dashboard, silver and ivory handles and more. These are surrounded by over 200 Haut Couture pieces from the particular era, as well as contemporary art exhibits. This makes the museum ideal for everyone to enjoy.
