McDonald’s China Is Selling A Spam Burger With Oreo Crumbs

McDonald’s China Is Selling A Spam Burger With Oreo CrumbsWhen traveling in China, some people avoid the local food and head straight to McDonald’s, but this might not be the best idea.

Virtually every country in the world sports Chinese restaurants, selling international versions of true Chinese cuisine. Many Chinese people will tell you that the food served isn’t the same as at home. However, China does have branches of international fast food restaurants, including the iconic McDonald’s. However, their latest offering is a long, long way from a Big Mac, as they introduce a Spam burger, topped with Oreo crumbs.

Just when people thought they couldn’t be shocked by offerings at a fast food chain restaurant, it happened again. Some Domino’s customers might remember the bubble tea pizza? Well, it looks like McDonald’s China has topped that.

Whether it is going to be a permanent option on the menu is unknown. However, this week, for one day only, diners were invited to try Spam and Oreo burgers. The chain slaps two, extra-thick slices of Spam on a bun (in case you don’t know it, this is canned, cooked pork sold by Hormel Foods Corporation) topped with Oreo crumbs and lathered with McDonald’s classic burger sauce.

Luncheon Meat Is A ‘Trending Food’

Abbie Xie, the communications manager of McDonald’s China, spoke to CNN Travel about the new offering. She said, “Luncheon meat is a trending food among youngsters nowadays.” She went on to say the burger “has a very strong meaty and satisfying texture.”

Xie went on to say that the “flavorful and crispy Oreo” is a snack youngsters are very familiar with. She said by combining the two foods, this doesn’t just showcase the “collision of tastes and textures, it is also quite topical socially.”

The new, limited-edition McDonald’s burger was offered on December 21. It was one of McDonald’s China’s “members only” promotions, which are a series of special offers and discounts available each Monday.

Spam And Oreo Burgers Sold Out

McDonald’s China offered a voucher to purchase the new burger at a reasonable cost equivalent to US$2. According to Xie, they produced a total of 400,000 Oreo luncheon meat burgers, which were available at around 3,700 branches across the country. She explained that each branch had a limited supply and the burgers were sold out by noon in some outlets. According to Xie, the overall sale was good and led to some fierce discussions on social media.

CNN Travel quotes one Weibo member, who wrote, “Oreos and luncheon meat are surprisingly delicious [together].” They added that they thought the sweetness and savory wouldn’t match, but it was “unexpectedly harmonious and tasty.”

Another social media user found the burger good, but said it was too small. They wrote, “As someone from Shandong, I am quite fond of this level of saltiness. If you disregard the price tag and its miniature size, I’d give it 80 points (out of 100).” Reportedly, people in Shangdong province are well known for loving salty food.

Others on Weibo were quick to criticize the Spam and Oreo burger. One wrote that it wasn’t bad, but it couldn’t be considered tasty. They added that the Oreo crumbs were “everywhere,” writing that if you swallow, you would completely forget about the taste.

Other social media users noted that this could quite likely be the “easiest McDonald’s burger to DIY at home.” This is good news for any reader who feels they might have missed out on a rare culinary treat.
