Visitors To Jamaica To Pay A Mandatory Medical And Crisis Response Insurance Fee

Visitors To Jamaica To Pay A Mandatory Medical And Crisis Response Insurance FeeThere has been a change to the various protocols for international travelers to Jamaica with a new mandatory insurance fee due.

Jamaica closed its borders when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, but reopened on June 15. Initially, visitors had to produce a negative coronavirus test result, undergo temperature checks and complete a Travel Authorization form. However, now visitors to the Caribbean island will have to pay a new medical and crisis response insurance fee on top of this.

Medical And Crisis Response Insurance

Known as Jamaica Cares, the country is introducing a mandatory fee of $40 for visitors entering the country. This is to cover a traveler protection, emergency medical and crisis response service. The new service is set to launch in November and is aimed at giving travelers confidence when they are ready to start traveling again.

The program is being coordinated by the Global Tourism Resilience Crisis Management Center and will be administered with travel crisis management provider, Global Rescue, as well as two travel health insurance companies.

The center reports that Jamaica is the first country to facilitate a partnership to offer a comprehensive pandemic safety response program. The program covers medical treatment costs, as well as field rescue, evacuation and repatriation of visitors for medical emergencies, including COVID-19 or natural disasters.

International Health Coverage

Jamaica Cares will provide transport logistics, case management and health coverage of up to $100,000 for travelers heading to and from Jamaica. There is also on-island health coverage of up to $50,000.

The Hon. Edmund Bartlett, co-chairman of Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Center spoke about the program. He said, “Jamaica Cares delivers an unmet need in the travel industry by providing primary medical coverage and medical evacuation services.”

“The traveler knows they’re protected, and they know other travelers are, too. That’s what’s needed to give confidence to travelers when they are ready to travel,” he added.

As for the new fee, this will now be included as part of the same application process when planning a trip to Jamaica. Participation is mandatory for all non-Jamaican passport holders. Read more information about Jamaica Cares on the Global Rescue website.
