Galveston Island Texas – Spring Break Beach Party, Crowds Expected!

Galveston Island Texas - Spring Break Beach Party, Crowds Expected!Spring Break is coming soon and Galveston Island is a popular destination for crowds looking for fun in the sun. Business owners and tourism attractions are already gearing up for the event. However, after Texas reopens to 100 percent capacity next Wednesday, the island has said they will continue to have COVID-19 protocols in place to protect both locals and visitors from the virus.

Galveston Island Opens Up For Spring Break

ABC 13 spoke to business owners on Galveston Island about the expected crowds coming for Spring Break. Julie Roberts, who manages Dorothy May’s fashion store, spoke of the consensus among store owners and managers on the Strand. She said business owners will continue to operate with COVID-19 protocols and measures in place to protect themselves, locals and visitors alike.

Roberts said it will be “pretty much business as usual,” except for the cleaning, the guidelines and mask wearing. She said if they see the numbers, particularly on the weekend, starting to look like capacity, they will have to act. They will tell people to stop at the door and wait until some other people leave.

Galveston Normally Welcomes 300,000 People For Spring Break

According to Michael Woody, Chief Tourism Officer for the Galveston Island Convention and Visitor Bureau, in previous years they have welcomed 300,000 visitors for Spring Break. He said that with Gov. Greg Abbott making an executive order to open up to 100 percent capacity, while leaving mask rules to the establishment and business owners, will definitely help to reopen many of their tourist attractions.

Woody said they are currently surveying all their industry partners to get a better feel for what each will ask its visitors to do. However, he said the best course of action for anyone planning a Spring Break visit is to bring their masks along with them.

The CTO added that they want visitors to be able to experience as much of the island as they can. He said many places will really be encouraging that. However, Woody did add that while the island has started to see an increase in visitors, experts in the industry believe it could take two or three years to fully recover from the effects of the pandemic.

Beaches Will Be Open

The Galveston Island Beach Patrol has said the beaches will be open for Spring Break. Reportedly, the previous restriction relating to groups no larger than 10 people was already lifted prior to the governor’s announcement.

According to Woody, the island is also hoping cruise lines will be able to restart this summer. He said that of the 7.5 million visitors each year, around one million come from cruises. Woody added that Carnival, Disney and Royal Caribbean are the cruise lines that operate out of Galveston Island.

Should you be planning on spending Spring Break on Galveston Island, please take note of each business and attraction’s policy relating to number and masks. Make sure you have a great time, but in safety.
