Disney just purchased a cruise ship that has been sitting unfinished for some time in the former MV Werften shipyard in Germany. After the shipbuilder went bankrupt, what was expected to be the world’s largest ship was scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the new owner of the 1,122-foot Global Dream plans to feature all its “innovative Disney experiences” and more.

Disney Cruise Line purchases unfinished Global Dream

The original shipbuilder of Global Dream halted construction earlier this year after declaring bankruptcy. This led to the 1,122-foot Global Dream standing unfinished and gathering dust. Meanwhile, earlier this week, Disney announced that it had purchased the unfinished ship, the sister ship of what was expected to be the world’s largest cruise ship before it was scrapped. Now, the entertainment conglomerate will finish building the Global Dream with a goal of completing construction by 2025.

On Thursday, Disney shared an artistic rendition of the cruise ship to its official Instagram account, with the caption:

Today, Disney announced the acquisition of a partially completed ship that will bring the magic of a @DisneyCruiseLine vacation to new global destinations. The ship, to be based outside the United States, will feature innovative Disney experiences along with the dazzling entertainment, world-class dining and legendary guest service that sets Disney Cruise Line apart.

Now, the company plans to work with another German shipbuilder, Meyer Werft, to complete the construction of the boat. Once construction is complete, the cruise ship will be renamed and fancied up with the Mickey Mouse-inspired colors found on all Disney Cruise Line ships.

According to the press release, the ship will feature “innovative Disney experiences along with the dazzling entertainment, world-class dining and legendary guest service that sets Disney Cruise Line apart.” As yet, no amenities have been announced, but the new ship, which will be based outside of the US, will be more eco-friendly. In fact, it will be one of the first cruise ships to be fueled by low-emission green ethanol.

Once complete, the ship will be able to carry 6,000 passengers and around 2,300 crew members. However, reportedly this will make it smaller than its original sister was expected to be. In fact, Global Dream II was supposed to carry 9,000 passengers. Despite this, the 208,000-gross-ton ship will still be the seventh largest in the world and the largest in Disney’s fleet. Also, it was not revealed how much the company paid for the ship, other than it was purchased at a “favorable price.”

‘Unique opportunity’

In a statement, Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, said:

Our cruise ships give us the unique opportunity to bring Disney magic to fans no matter where they are, and the addition of this ship will make a Disney Cruise Line vacation accessible to more families than ever before.

Meanwhile, whatever happens to the cruise ship is better than what happened to Global Dream II. That ship was in the process of being built by MV Werften when the company went bankrupt. Earlier in 2022, that project was scrapped entirely, despite the fact that it had already cost some $1.4 billion.

Now, guests of Disney Cruise Line can look forward to yet another amazing cruise ship. Moreover, they can expect all the trimmings and entertainment for the cruise of a lifetime.
