Spain is already known as a popular destination for international travelers. However, according to a study by Omio transport booking website, Granada is the most affordable for a city break. For those looking for a great city escape, without having to spend too much money, read on.

Study reveals Granada is cheapest for a city break in Europe

Following the pandemic, travel has again picked up for most of the world. However, not everyone who longs to travel has plenty of money to do so. For this reason, the Omio transport booking website has run a new study on 100 different cities throughout Europe.

Once the study was completed, Granada in Andalucia, Spain has been dubbed the cheapest destination for a city break due to its many free attractions. Meanwhile, Granada isn’t alone, as three other Spanish cities have also made it into the top ten.

Why is the city ranked the cheapest?

Following the study, it was clear that Granada is the cheapest destination due to the city being the most affordable. However, the historic city also offers the highest number of free attractions and activities. Meanwhile, the study aimed to show travelers that they can save money if they organize their travel while taking advantage of opportunities and free offers.

Meanwhile, the study’s objective was to identify the best European destinations to visit on a reduced budget. Due to the current economic climate and rising prices affecting almost all daily costs, some people find it hard to travel. However, it has been revealed where travelers can find a cheap destination for a fun and rewarding city break.

In fact, the city of Granada was seen to feature a total of 112 free tourist attractions, as well as 10 free museums. The city also offers 60 varying emblematic locations to visit.

Cost savings in Granada

To get an idea of the possible savings, a meal for two in average restaurant costs €50 (US$52). Meanwhile, going out for a few drinks in Granada is also affordable, with an average cost of a beer at €2.50 (US$2.60) with a free plate of tapas on the side. With the average price of a beer in Europe being €4.91 (US$5.09), this works out as almost 50 percent cheaper.

One of the most iconic attractions in Granada is the UNESCO-listed Moorish Alhambra Palace, which bears an entry fee of €14 (US$14.50) per adult. Meanwhile, the city’s hop-on-hop-off tourist bus is €9 (US$9.33).

A meal for two in an average restaurant is €50.00 (US$51.85) while visiting the UNESCO-listed Moorish Alhambra is €14 for adults. Meanwhile, the average cost of a tourist bus ticket in Europe is €21.00 (US$21.78). However, the ticket price for the tour bus in Granada is €7.00 (US$7.26). But that’s not all, as a regular, 24-hour bus ticket is only €1.40 (US$1.45).

Meanwhile, overall, Granada snagged a score of 100 percent, while Bruges in Belgium came in second with 93.5 percent. Surprisingly, the popular Italian city of Venice came in third with 82.3 percent when it comes to the possibility of a cheap vacation.

What else does Granada have to offer?

Nestling in the foothills of the scenic Sierra Nevada mountain range, the city comes tops for a number of other requirements for an affordable city break. In fact, it got almost full marks for the availability of free Wi-Fi hotspots, public drinking fountains, affordable fast food, pubs and nightclubs as well as affordable guided tours.

Meanwhile, looking at the other Spanish cities that came up in the top ten, it should be clear that the country is an overall cost-friendly destination. Besides Granada at the top, three other cities were also listed. Valencia was ranked at number four, followed by two more Andalucian destinations, with Seville at number eight and Málaga at number nine.

According to the study, Valencia has 55 free tourist attractions, while Seville has an amazing 108 and Málaga offers 59. As for public transport, the cheapest daily ticket available in the country is in Málaga at €1.35 (US$1.40). Moreover, other cities with 24-hour tickets for less than €3.00 (US$3.11) are Pamplona at €1.35 (US$1.40), Granada at €1.40 (US$1.45), Murcia at €2.15 (US$2.23) and Barcelona at €10.50 (US$10.89).

Meanwhile, The Local notes that Barcelona only narrowly missed hitting the top 10 by coming in at number 11 of the cheapest cities in Europe. Other top 100 Spanish cities are Zaragoza at number 17, Pamplona at number 22, Alicante at 31, Murcia at 40 and Madrid at number 41.
