Scotland doesn’t do your average New Year celebration. In fact, Edinburgh’s three-day Hogmanay extravaganza should be experienced by everyone at least once. The event kicks off on December 30, with a striking torchlight procession along the Royal Mile and lively street parties. On the big night, partygoers can experience a Scottish music program, with the likes of Dougie McLean, Eddi Reader and Breabach. Meanwhile, the music ends at the perfect time as everyone rushes to see the incredible views of midnight fireworks over Edinburgh Castle.

However, while most people in the world are sleeping in on January 1, celebrations continue in Edinburgh with the fun tradition of taking a dip in the freezing Firth of Forth – also known as the “Loony Dook.” Find out more about the fun events taking place in Edinburgh at edinburghshogmanay.com.

For those spending New Year’s Eve with someone special, where better to head to than the city of romance itself, Paris? Here you will experience the incredible firework display on Champs-Élysées or head for the fun street parties up in Sacré-Cœur with a panoramic view of all the festivities below.

Bear in mind, there won’t be fireworks on the Eiffel Tower, as that only happens on Bastille Day. Naturally, you can see Paris’ most famous landmark lit up every night with no crowds to navigate.

While New Year’s Eve in the Big Apple might not be the most original choice, it is New York City’s best and biggest party. However, if you don’t like the crowds in the streets below, head to the R Lounge in the Renaissance Hotel to enjoy views of the big event in comfort as the ball drops for 2023.

Meanwhile, if you have done the Times Square party before, make like a true New Yorker and head to Brooklyn instead. Here, you can enjoy live music and free fireworks at Prospect Park or watch the excitement from Brooklyn Bridge.

Bring in the New Year in Barcelona, Spain

Anyone that has visited Barcelona knows it is a city for night owls, which means celebrations don’t really kick off until around 11 pm. At that time, people head to Plaça d’Espanya to gaze at the midnight pyrotechnics on Mount Montjuïc. Meanwhile, close by in Poble Espanyol (the Spanish village), you can join a huge dance party until 6 am.

One thing to bear in mind, wherever you spend New Year’s Eve in Spain is that there is a fun tradition of eating a grape for each chime at midnight. In Barcelona, the best place for this is in Plaça de Catalunya in the city center. It is recommended to buy seedless grapes and peel off the skins to make it easy to gobble them down during the seconds leading up to 2023 – it does tend to take some practice! From there, head to the local nightclubs to carry on partying until the morning light.

If you feel like slowly building up to the big event, enjoy dinner and cocktails while watching the sunset. Then, just before midnight, go and join the party to bring in New Year. Party all night then head to the beach for a swim on the first morning of 2023.
