Much of the world has already opened up fully after the COVID-19 pandemic, but some do still have travel restrictions, especially in Asia. However, these five popular Asian locations are fully open with no vaccine or testing required in 2023.

Asian countries that have dropped COVID travel restrictions

1. Thailand drops travel restrictions

Known for its idyllic beaches and beautiful landscapes, Thailand is a popular Asian destination. However, the Southeast Asia country did make headlines recently when it spoke of bringing back a vaccination requirement for all travelers. Just days later, the country dropped the mandate after facing widespread backlash.

These days, Thailand has no vaccination or testing requirements in place. However, there is still a mask mandate on public transport, which is not enforced or followed.

2. COVID status in Cambodia

Also located in Southeast Asia, Cambodia has also dropped all its COVID-related travel restrictions, including vaccinations and testing. Moreover, the mask mandate has been dropped in Cambodia. Of course, this incredible country is best known for its Angkor Wat temple complex and other fascinating historic architecture.

3. Travel restrictions in Malaysia

Malaysia is another nation with idyllic beaches and beautiful rainforests. Moreover, its capital, Kuala Lumpur is a fascinating travel destination. Therefore, it is good to know that this Asian country is also fully back to normal. There are no requirements for vaccination or testing for international travelers and no mask mandate, making it a breeze to visit.

4. COVID status of South Korea

South Korea finally dropped its mask mandate almost three years after the pandemic started. This comes with travel restrictions, such as vaccination and additional testing, all dropped. However, the indoor mask mandate is still in force, which makes travelers consider visiting countries where masks are no longer required.

5. Vietnam drops travel restrictions

Vietnam is another Asian country that has dropped all travel restrictions and returned to normal. It is no longer necessary for international travelers to show proof of vaccination, or a negative test result to cross the border. Now, visitors can fully take advantage of the beautiful and diverse landscapes of Vietnam, including idyllic beaches, historic cities, Ha Long Bay and, of course, delicious food. While technically, mask mandates are still in effect in some indoor locations, this is typically not enforced.

Asian countries with travel regulations in force

Among countries in Asia, the following still have COVID-era restrictions:

  • Indonesia: Only vaccinated travelers welcomed
  • Hong Kong: Negative COVID test for all travelers, plus mask mandate in force
  • Japan: Unvaccinated travelers still require a negative COVID test. However, there is no formal mask mandate
  • Laos: No vaccination or testing requirements, but a widely followed mask mandate is still in force
  • The Philippines: The Philippines still require a negative COVID test for unvaccinated travelers.
