About València, Spain

City of Arts and Sciences

Besides featuring world-class dining, València is an exciting coastal city, renowned for its historic Old Town with iconic tapas bars and restaurants. On the other end of the scale, it is famous for the futuristic buildings at the City of the Arts and Sciences (Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias), which was designed by Santiago Calatrava.

Meanwhile, Spain’s third-largest city has excellent museums to explore. The city also offers a long stretch of well-cared-for beach for days in the sun and sand.

The city’s cathedral was built over a mosque after the 1238 reconquest and it’s mostly Gothic in style, with neoclassical side chapels. However, the highlights here are the museum, a pair of Goya paintings in the Capilla de San Francisco de Borja and rich Italianate frescoes above the altarpiece.

Animal lovers will appreciate visiting Bioparc València, a park devoted to African animals. Rather than confining the creatures in cages, the Bioparc has an educational and conservationist remit. Animals such as gorillas, leopards, hippos and aardvarks roam free in spacious habitats, ranging from savannah to equatorial landscapes. However, possibly the most magical is Madagascar, where cute lemurs run in the grass around visitors’ feet.

After an exciting day exploring, make sure to visit Tatel València for a meal during your visit to the city.
